How it works
Jupiter labeled in three views: the belts, zones and Great Red Spot on its face, the layers inside, and the four large moons with the rings. Read the names, then press Quiz me or print it blank.

The face
North is at the top. The stripes are clouds. On the real planet the darker ones are called belts and the lighter ones zones. The Equatorial Zone runs across the middle, with an equatorial belt and then a tropical zone on each side. The Great Red Spot is a giant storm in the southern half.
Inside, then the moons
Jupiter has no true surface. Under a thin layer of clouds, hydrogen gas is squeezed into a liquid, and deeper still into liquid metallic hydrogen. The core has no sharp edge. Of the four large moons, Io is the closest, then Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. The rings are thin and faint.
- The tints are this site's own. They are not Jupiter's real colors.
Questions and answers
What are the stripes on Jupiter called?
The dark stripes are called belts and the lighter bands are called zones. They are clouds, and they flow east and west in opposite directions.
What is the Great Red Spot?
The Great Red Spot is a giant storm in Jupiter's southern half, bigger than Earth. It lies in the South Tropical Zone, on the edge of the South Equatorial Belt.
What is inside Jupiter?
Mostly hydrogen and helium. Below the clouds the hydrogen gas is compressed into a liquid, and deeper down into liquid metallic hydrogen. The core is partly dissolved, with no clear edge.
What are Jupiter's four largest moons?
Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto, in order of distance from Jupiter. Galileo first saw them in 1610. Ganymede is the largest moon in the solar system.
Does Jupiter have rings?
Yes. Jupiter's rings are faint and made of small, dark particles, so they are hard to see except when the Sun lights them from behind.
