How it works
This countries of the world quiz is a blank world map with the 110 largest member states of the United Nations to find. Buttons cut the round to one continent, the 25 largest countries or the 30 most populous.
Read the full guide
Why 110 countries and not 193
The United Nations has 193 member states, and on one world map most of the small ones would be too small to tap. This page asks the 110 largest by total area, from Russia down to Jordan at about 89,000 square kilometers. As a UN member states quiz it is strict: the two observer states and the territories are never asked.
Eight shorter rounds
Five sets under Start from zoom the map to one continent, and Oceania asks Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea on the whole map. The 30 most populous countries runs from India to Sudan: a 30 most populous countries quiz in which each answer adds the rank and the United Nations population estimate for mid-2023.
Start with The 25 largest countries: with Russia, Canada, China, Brazil and Australia named, the rest are easier to place.
North Africa from west to east: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt. The row below: Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Chad, Sudan.
Big shape, small population: Canada, Australia and Kazakhstan are outside the 30 most populous, while small Bangladesh is number 8.
Questions and answers
Which countries are left out, and where are they asked?
The 83 member states smaller than Jordan. Twenty-nine are on the Europe map, 16 in Central America and the Caribbean, 15 in Africa, 12 more in Asia and 11 in the Pacific. South America has none: all 12 of its countries are asked here.
Can two people play it as a map game?
Yes. Each player presses the same button, and the round keeps a score and a clock. After a round, Share score makes a link that carries your score, your time and the button you played: a world map quiz game by message.
Why is Greenland drawn but never asked?
Greenland is an autonomous territory in the Kingdom of Denmark, not a member state, so it is never lit. At about 2.17 million square kilometers it is larger than Saudi Arabia, the 12th largest country. Denmark is asked on the Europe map.
How do I name the countries instead of finding them?
Switch to Name it. A country lights up with no name on it, and you pick from four names or type one. That makes the page a name the countries of the world quiz, and typing forgives one wrong letter in a longer name.
