How it works
A heat press fixes a printed transfer onto a shirt with heat and pressure for a set time. The drawing shows a manual clamshell press from the side, open, with nine parts to name.

The two platens
The heat platen is the hot upper plate. It closes onto the lower platen, which makers also call the base plate. A silicone pad lies on the lower platen so the garment is pressed evenly.
Clamshell and swing-away
On a clamshell press, drawn here, the heat platen lifts on a hinge at the back. On a swing-away press it rises and turns to the side, clear of the lower platen. The parts carry the same names on both.
- The handle is also called the press lever, and the controller the control panel or control box. The quiz accepts each.
Questions and answers
What are the parts of a heat press called?
The heat platen above and the lower platen below, with a silicone pad between them. The handle closes the press, the pressure knob sets how hard it presses, and the controller sets the temperature and time.
What is the platen on a heat press?
A platen is a flat plate. The upper one, the heat platen, has the heating element inside it. The lower platen stays cool and holds the garment.
What does the pressure knob do?
It changes the gap between the two platens when the press is closed, so the same pull on the handle presses harder or more lightly.
What do the two displays on the controller show?
One shows the temperature of the heat platen and the other the time. On many presses the timer starts counting when the handle closes the press.
