The newest province

Flevoland, in the middle of the country, is land reclaimed from the sea and became the twelfth province in 1986. Utrecht is the smallest province. The Caribbean islands of the Kingdom are not drawn. Zeeland, in the south-west, is mostly islands and peninsulas.

  • Amsterdam is the capital, in North Holland, but the government sits in The Hague, in South Holland. Ask students to mark both.

Questions and answers

How many provinces does the Netherlands have?

Twelve, since Flevoland became a province in 1986. All twelve are numbered on this map.

What is the difference between Holland and the Netherlands?

Holland is two provinces, North Holland and South Holland, on the west coast. The Netherlands is the whole country of twelve provinces.

Are Aruba and Curaçao on the map?

No. They are countries within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, far away in the Caribbean, not provinces.
