Start here: 8 main regions 8

  1. Cranial region The upper part of the head, over the brain.
  2. Cervical region The neck, front and back.
  3. Thoracic region The chest.
  4. Abdominal region The front of the trunk below the chest: the stomach area.
  5. Brachial region The upper arm, the brachium; anatomists call only this part the arm.
  6. Femoral region The thigh.
  7. Crural region The crus, the leg between the knee and the ankle. Anatomists call only that part the leg.
  8. Dorsal region The upper back.

Head 5

  1. Ocular region The eyes; also called the orbital region.
  2. Nasal region The nose.
  3. Buccal region The cheeks.
  4. Otic region The ears; also called the auricle.
  5. Mental region The chin.

Neck and trunk 3

  1. Umbilical region The navel, at the centre of the abdomen.
  2. Coxal region The hips, around the belt line.
  3. Inguinal region The groin, where the legs meet the trunk.

Upper limb 6

  1. Axillary region The armpit.
  2. Antecubital region The front of the elbow.
  3. Antebrachial region The forearm, the antebrachium, between the elbow and the wrist.
  4. Carpal region The wrist.
  5. Palmar region The palm of the hand, with the thumb (the pollex).
  6. Digital region The fingers; also called the phalangeal region. The toes are digital too.

Lower limb 3

  1. Patellar region The front of the knee, over the kneecap.
  2. Tarsal region The ankle.
  3. Pedal region The foot.

From the back 6

  1. Acromial region The point of the shoulder.
  2. Lumbar region The lower back.
  3. Olecranal region The back of the elbow.
  4. Gluteal region The buttocks.
  5. Popliteal region The hollow at the back of the knee.
  6. Sural region The calf, the back of the leg.

How this list was compiled: Read 2026-09-27. OpenStax, Anatomy and Physiology 2e, 1.6 Anatomical Terminology, https://openstax.org/books/anatomy-and-physiology-2e/pages/1-6-anatomical-terminology : Figure 1.12, Regions of the Human Body, in anatomical position from the front and the back: cranial, facial, ocular, buccal, otic (auricle), nasal, mental, cervical, thoracic, mammary, abdominal, umbilicus, coxal, pubic, inguinal, femoral, patellar, crural, tarsal, pedal and digital (phalangeal), with the hallux; axillary, brachial, antecubital, antebrachial, carpal, palmar and digital (phalangeal), with the pollex; from the back cervical, dorsal, lumbar, acromial, brachial, olecranal, antebrachial, manual, gluteal, femoral, popliteal, sural and plantar; the cephalic region takes in all the head's regions. The text: brachium (arm) is kept for the upper arm and antebrachium (forearm) for the lower; femur (thigh); leg or crus only for the part between the knee and the ankle. Licence: own work

The drawing: Drawn for this site on 2026-10-04 by script. The outline of the figure in both views follows "Silhouette humain asexue anterieur posterieur.svg" by Christophe Dang Ngoc Chan (cdang), 2013, Wikimedia Commons (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Silhouette_humain_asexue_anterieur_posterieur.svg), CC0 1.0 public domain dedication, itself drawn after Mikael Haggstrom's public domain photograph "Human Body.jpg"; its left half is mirrored so the figure is symmetric and the head is drawn without hair. The face, the ears, the inner lines and every region border are drawn here from surface anatomy. Licence: own work

How it works

Find each regional term on a body in the anatomical position, front view first, then the back. Start with the 8 main regions, then the head, trunk, limbs and back.

Anatomical position

Every term assumes the body stands facing you, palms forward. So the palmar region is the palm side even when the hand is turned, and the body's right is on your left in the front view.

Arm and leg mean less

In anatomy the brachial region, the arm, is only the upper arm; below the elbow is the antebrachial region, the forearm. The femoral region is the thigh, and the crural region, the leg, is only the part between the knee and the ankle.

  • Pair front and back: antecubital and olecranal are the two sides of the elbow, patellar and popliteal the two sides of the knee.

Questions and answers

What are the regions of the body in anatomy?

Named areas used to say exactly where something is: cranial (head), cervical (neck), thoracic (chest), abdominal, brachial (upper arm), antebrachial (forearm), carpal (wrist), femoral (thigh), crural (leg), pedal (foot), and dorsal and lumbar on the back.

What is the difference between the brachial and antebrachial regions?

Brachial is the upper arm, between the shoulder and the elbow. Antebrachial is the forearm, between the elbow and the wrist.

What is the crural region?

The leg in the anatomist's sense: only the part between the knee and the ankle. Its back, the calf, is the sural region.
