Start here: 6 main parts 6

  1. Calcaneus The heel bone, the largest bone of the foot. Body weight passes from the talus down to it and it rests on the ground.
  2. Talus The most superior tarsal. Its upper surface meets the tibia and fibula to form the ankle joint.
  3. Navicular A tarsal in front of the talus. It meets the three cuneiforms in front of it.
  4. Cuboid A tarsal on the outer side, in front of the calcaneus.
  5. Metatarsals The five long bones of the middle of the foot. They are numbered 1 to 5 from the big toe. The first is shortest and thickest, the second longest.
  6. Proximal phalanges The first bone of each toe, joining the metatarsal.

The seven tarsals 3

  1. Medial cuneiform The wedge-shaped cuneiform on the big-toe side, in front of the navicular.
  2. Intermediate cuneiform The middle of the three wedge-shaped cuneiforms, between the other two.
  3. Lateral cuneiform The third cuneiform, next to the cuboid.

Metatarsals and toes: 4 2

  1. Middle phalanges The middle bone of toes 2 to 5. The big toe has none.
  2. Distal phalanges The last bone of each toe, at the tip.

How this list was compiled: Read 2026-09-26. OpenStax Anatomy and Physiology 2e, section 8.4 Bones of the Lower Limb, https://openstax.org/books/anatomy-and-physiology-2e/pages/8-4-bones-of-the-lower-limb : seven tarsal bones; the talus the most superior, meeting the tibia and fibula at the ankle joint; the calcaneus (heel bone) the largest bone of the foot, taking body weight from the talus; the cuboid in front of the calcaneus; the navicular in front of the talus, meeting the medial, intermediate and lateral cuneiforms; five metatarsals numbered 1 to 5 from the medial side, the first shorter and thicker, the second longest; 14 phalanges, the big toe (hallux) with proximal and distal phalanges only. The drawing: Drawn for this site on 2026-10-04: the outline of every bone, where it begins and ends and how the bones lie against each other were read off Gray's Anatomy of the Human Body (20th US edition, 1918), fig. 268, Bones of the right foot, dorsal surface, drawn by Henry Vandyke Carter, public domain (Wikimedia Commons, File:Gray268.png), turned so the toes point up; the muscle attachments and lettering of the plate are left out and a thin joint space is drawn between neighbouring bones. How it works

The foot bones unlabeled, the right foot seen from above with the heel at the bottom: all seven tarsals, the five metatarsals and three rows of toe bones. Start with the 6 main parts.

The tarsals

The calcaneus is the heel and the largest foot bone. The talus sits on it and meets the leg at the ankle. In front of the talus is the navicular, then the medial, intermediate and lateral cuneiforms; the cuboid sits in front of the heel on the outer side.

Metatarsals and toes

Five metatarsals are numbered from the big toe: the first is shortest and thickest, the second the longest. Each toe has proximal, middle and distal phalanges, except the big toe, which has only two.

  • Seven tarsals, five metatarsals and fourteen phalanges: 26 bones in each foot.

Questions and answers

What are the seven tarsal bones?

The calcaneus, talus, navicular, cuboid, and the medial, intermediate and lateral cuneiforms, all in the back half of the foot.

Which is the largest bone of the foot?

The calcaneus, the heel bone. Body weight passes from the tibia to the talus and down to the calcaneus, which rests on the ground.

How many phalanges are in the foot?

Fourteen. The big toe has a proximal and a distal phalanx; the other four toes each have proximal, middle and distal phalanges.
