Show the list

Hip and thigh 7

  1. Hip bone Made of three fused bones: ilium, ischium and pubis.
  2. Femur (thigh bone) The only bone of the thigh, and the longest in the body.
  3. Head of the femur The ball that fits the acetabulum, the cup of the hip bone.
  4. Greater trochanter A large bump at the top of the shaft, outer side.
  5. Medial epicondyle of the femur The larger of the two bumps above the knee, inner side.
  6. Lateral epicondyle of the femur The smaller of the two bumps above the knee, outer side.
  7. Patella (kneecap) A sesamoid bone in the tendon of the quadriceps muscle.

Knee and lower leg 8

  1. Tibia (shinbone) The larger, inner bone of the lower leg: the shin.
  2. Fibula The slim bone on the outer side of the lower leg.
  3. Medial condyle of the tibia The inner half of the wide top of the tibia.
  4. Lateral condyle of the tibia The outer half of the wide top of the tibia.
  5. Tibial tuberosity The bump where the patellar ligament attaches.
  6. Head of the fibula The upper end of the fibula. It meets the lateral condyle of the tibia.
  7. Medial malleolus The inner ankle bump, at the lower end of the tibia.
  8. Lateral malleolus The outer ankle bump, at the lower end of the fibula.

Ankle 7

  1. Talus The top tarsal; it meets the tibia and fibula at the ankle.
  2. Calcaneus (heel bone) The largest tarsal; it forms the heel.
  3. Navicular Lies between the talus and the three cuneiforms.
  4. Cuboid On the outer side, between the calcaneus and the last two metatarsals.
  5. Lateral cuneiform The outer cuneiform, behind the third metatarsal.
  6. Intermediate cuneiform The middle cuneiform, behind the second metatarsal.
  7. Medial cuneiform The inner cuneiform, behind the first metatarsal.

Foot 8

  1. First metatarsal The metatarsal behind the big toe. Metatarsals are numbered from the inner side.
  2. Second metatarsal The metatarsal behind the second toe.
  3. Third metatarsal The metatarsal behind the third toe.
  4. Fourth metatarsal The metatarsal behind the fourth toe.
  5. Fifth metatarsal The metatarsal behind the little toe. Its base has a tuberosity on the outer side.
  6. Proximal phalanges The first row of toe bones, one in each toe.
  7. Middle phalanges The second row; the big toe has none.
  8. Distal phalanges The bones at the tips of the toes.

How this list was compiled: Every name checked on 2026-10-01 in both Henry Gray, Anatomy of the Human Body, 1918 (public domain: hip bone, femur, patella, tibia, fibula, tarsus, metatarsus, phalanges of the foot) and the TeachMeAnatomy articles on the same bones, in our own words. Licence: own work

The drawing: Drawn for this site on 2026-10-05 by script. The bone outlines were read off four public domain plates of Henry Gray, Anatomy of the Human Body (20th US edition, 1918; drawings by Henry Vandyke Carter and others; Wikimedia Commons, public domain): fig. 241 'Male pelvis' (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gray241.png, the right hip bone), fig. 244 'Right femur. Anterior surface' (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gray244.png), fig. 258 'Bones of the right leg. Anterior surface' (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gray258.png) and fig. 268 'Bones of the right foot. Dorsal surface' (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gray268.png). The kneecap, the talus seen from the front, the cup of the hip joint, the tinted landmark areas and the inner lines are our own. Bones that are only context in a panel are drawn faint and carry no ring. Licence: own drawing; outlines after public domain plates

How it works

This bones of the leg and foot quiz covers a right leg from the front in four close-ups, hip to toes. A finished round leaves the bones of the thigh and leg labeled.

Hip to ankle

The femur is the only bone of the thigh; its head fits the hip bone and its two epicondyles flank the knee, with the patella in front. Below the knee the tibia is the inner, larger bone and the fibula the slim outer one. Their lower ends are the two malleoli, the bumps at the ankle.

Ankle and foot

The two foot drawings look down on the top of the foot, toes toward the bottom. Seven tarsals come first, then five metatarsals numbered from the big toe, then the phalanges. Under More options, Study shows the human leg skeleton labeled, and you can print it blank.

  • In every drawing the inner side of the leg, the big-toe side, is on your right.
  • The big toe has two phalanges; each of the other toes has three.

Questions and answers

What are the bones of the leg and foot?

From the top: the femur in the thigh, the patella at the knee, the tibia and fibula in the lower leg, then seven tarsals, five metatarsals and fourteen phalanges in the foot.

How many bones are in the leg?

Thirty in each lower limb below the hip bone: the femur, patella, tibia and fibula, plus seven tarsals, five metatarsals and fourteen phalanges.

Which bone is the shinbone?

The tibia. It is the larger, inner bone of the lower leg and bears the weight; the slim fibula lies beside it on the outer side.

What are the tarsal bones?

Seven bones of the ankle and the back of the foot: the talus, calcaneus, navicular, cuboid and the medial, intermediate and lateral cuneiforms.
