How this list was compiled: Own work: every map is drawn from its truth table and every answer is worked out from the same table (all prime implicants, then every cover with the fewest terms and the fewest literals; a map is asked for its simplest expression only when one such cover exists, and each wrong choice has another truth table). What a Karnaugh map is and the rules of grouping (no 0 in a group, no diagonal groups, 1, 2, 4, 8 or 16 cells, as large as possible, overlap allowed, the edges wrap around): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karnaugh_map and the University of Surrey tutorial Karnaugh Maps with its page Rules of Simplification, read on 2026-10-01 in the copies at https://web.archive.org/web/20230107132344/http://www.ee.surrey.ac.uk/Projects/Labview/minimisation/karnaugh.html and https://web.archive.org/web/20230213013214/http://www.ee.surrey.ac.uk/Projects/Labview/minimisation/karrules.html. How it works

This Karnaugh map quiz shows a map on every question. Pick the simplest sum-of-products expression for it, name the term a ringed group stands for, or say whether a ring is a group the rules allow.

Three sets

Start with two variables on a 2 by 2 map, then three on a 2 by 4 map, then four on a 4 by 4 map. Columns carry A, or A and B; rows carry the rest. A' means not A.

A k map quiz with every answer worked out

Each map is drawn from its truth table, and the answer is worked out from the same table. A map is asked for its simplest form only when one shortest answer exists.

Play or print

Tap a choice and the answer shows at once, with the groups named. A round is ten questions. After a round, Print lists its questions to trim or add to; the worksheet prints with the maps and, on a tick, a key.

  • Look for the largest groups first: eight cells, then four, then pairs.
  • The left and right edges are neighbors, and so are the top and bottom.

Questions and answers

What are the rules for grouping on a Karnaugh map?

A group holds only 1s, is a rectangle of 1, 2, 4, 8 or 16 cells, and never runs diagonally. Groups should be as large as possible, may overlap, and may wrap around the edges. Every 1 must be in a group.

Why do the columns go 00, 01, 11, 10?

In that order only one variable changes from each column to the next, and from the last column around to the first. Two neighboring 1s then differ in one variable, which drops out of their shared term.

How does a group turn into a term?

Keep the variables that stay the same in every cell of the group and drop the ones that take both values. A pair drops one variable, a group of four drops two and a group of eight drops three.

Can the four corners of a Karnaugh map be one group?

Yes. On a map of four variables the edges wrap around both ways, so the four corner cells are neighbors and make one group of four. With columns AB and rows CD its term is B'D'.

Is a K-map the same as a Karnaugh map?

Yes. K-map is the short name. It is a grid drawn from a truth table, one cell for each row, that is used to simplify a Boolean expression by grouping neighboring 1s.
