How this list was compiled: The 22 principal areas, the style of each (county, county borough, city), the administrative center of each (the council seat of a detail line; Ceredigion has two), the Welsh names, and the land areas and populations behind 'largest', 'smallest', 'most people' and 'fewest people' (Powys 5,181 square km, Gwynedd 2,535, Carmarthenshire 2,370, Torfaen 126, Merthyr Tydfil 111, Blaenau Gwent 109; Cardiff 381,516 people, Swansea 249,429, Rhondda Cynon Taf 241,015, Merthyr Tydfil 58,362): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Welsh_principal_areas (the table, its 2025 population column), read 2026-10-09. 1 April 1996, eleven counties and eleven county boroughs with the same powers, the eight counties and 37 districts they replaced, the four areas with city status, the names in the 1994 act (Cardiganshire; Aberconwy and Colwyn) and the transfer of St Dogmaels from Ceredigion to Pembrokeshire on 1 April 2003: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principal_areas_of_Wales, read 2026-10-09. Names and codes: ISO 3166-2:GB as printed at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166-2:GB, read 2026-10-09. Cardiff the capital of Wales: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wales, read 2026-10-09. Some lines are older than today's: the map source put the areas together from whole older districts, so Pentyrch and Creigiau (Cardiff) are drawn in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Ewenny, St Brides Major and Wick (Vale of Glamorgan) in Bridgend, Llansilin and Llangedwyn (Powys) in Wrexham, and St Dogmaels and Clynderwen (Pembrokeshire since 2003) in Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire; tested on 2026-10-01 against the boundary data when the drawing was made, and the article above lists the same communities as the parts that changed area. The lines are not redrawn by hand. The map was drawn for this site from Natural Earth 5.1.2, a public-domain map dataset; where a part lies on the map (a coast, a corner, a neighbor) was read from that drawing. Licence: own work

How it works

This Wales map quiz asks for the 22 principal areas: eleven counties and eleven county boroughs. Half of them crowd into the south, around Cardiff. The names are today’s; a few boundary lines are older, so some villages are drawn in the area next door.

Two rounds of eleven

Each round asks eleven areas from all over Wales. Eleven are the large areas of the north, west and middle, from Powys, the largest, to Monmouthshire in the southeast corner. Eleven are the south: along the coast from Swansea to Newport, and the small inland areas behind it.

Where each council sits

No area has a capital; each has a town its council is run from. Press Show me the labels first, then tap an area for its name and that town. Powys is run from Llandrindod Wells, Gwynedd from Caernarfon and Caerphilly from Ystrad Mynach. Ceredigion lists two, Aberaeron and Aberystwyth.

  • Typed answers count in Welsh too: Sir Benfro for Pembrokeshire, Casnewydd for Newport, Wrecsam for Wrexham.
  • Along the north coast, left to right: Gwynedd, Conwy, Denbighshire and Flintshire, with Wrexham tucked below Flintshire.

Questions and answers

How many counties are there in Wales?

Twenty-two principal areas, in place since 1 April 1996: eleven are styled counties and eleven county boroughs. They replaced eight counties and 37 districts. A county borough has the same powers as a county.

Which areas of Wales are cities?

Four of the 22 have city status: Cardiff, Swansea, Newport and Wrexham. Cardiff, on the south coast, is the capital of Wales and has the most people of any area.

What is the largest county in Wales?

Powys, which runs down the eastern side of the country. Gwynedd is second and Carmarthenshire third. Blaenau Gwent, in the south, is the smallest by land, and Merthyr Tydfil has the fewest people.

Is this map of Wales up to date?

The 22 areas and their names are today’s. Some lines are older: Pentyrch, now in Cardiff, is drawn in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Ewenny in Bridgend and not the Vale of Glamorgan, and Llansilin in Wrexham and not Powys. No answer depends on them.
