How it works

This blank map of England shows its 48 ceremonial counties, from Northumberland to Cornwall and Kent. Switch Borders off and it prints as a plain outline map of England with no county lines.

Blank, numbered or named

The sheet opens blank. Choose Numbered to put a number on each of the 48 counties of England, or Named for their names, then press Print this map; the answer key prints on its own sheet.

Which counties the map uses

These are the ceremonial counties of the Lieutenancies Act 1997, the list most maps of English counties follow. North Yorkshire is the largest; Bristol and the City of London are so small that each has a ring.

  • Greater London and the City of London are two separate counties on this list. The City is the tiny square mile in the middle of Greater London.

Questions and answers

How many counties does England have?

Forty-eight ceremonial counties, which is the list this map draws. Councils are organised differently, as counties, unitary authorities and boroughs, but the 48 are the counties of maps and addresses.

Which is the largest county in England?

North Yorkshire, followed by Lincolnshire. The smallest is the City of London, the square mile at the heart of London.

Can I print England with no county lines?

Yes. Switch Borders off and print: the sheet becomes the plain outline of England, the Isle of Wight included.
