How it works

Mexico has 31 states, and this Mexico states quiz adds Mexico City to make 32 shapes on a blank map. Mexico City and Tlaxcala are too small to tap, so each has a numbered ring set off to the northeast.

Start with one region, not all 32

The hard part of any Mexican states quiz is the crowded center. The sets under Start from cut a round down to Northern Mexico (11 states), Central Mexico (12 states and Mexico City) or Southern Mexico and the Yucatan (8 states), and the map zooms in to match. A wrong tap shows the right state. After the round, Practise the ones you missed replays only those.

Capitals are shown, not asked

After each answer a detail line names the state capital and one checked fact. The capital is often not the largest city: Tijuana is larger than Mexicali, and Cancún is larger than Chetumal. Print blank turns the Mexico states map quiz into a worksheet: a numbered map with 32 answer lines.

  • Learn the six states on the US border from west to east: Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas.
  • Keep the three places named Mexico apart. Typing only Mexico is marked wrong for both the State of Mexico and Mexico City.
  • The big peninsula in the southeast is three states: Campeche on the west, Yucatán at the northern tip and Quintana Roo on the Caribbean side.

Questions and answers

Does Mexico have 31 states or 32?

It has 31 states. Mexico City, the 32nd shape here, is the national capital and not formally a state. Reforms that took effect in 2016 brought its standing close to a state's, so official counts list 32 federal entities, the term this page's counter uses.

Can I use this Mexican states map quiz in class?

Yes. It runs in a browser with no sign-up, on a projector or a phone. Typed answers forgive missing accents, so Michoacan and Yucatan count, as do Estado de Mexico and the short form CDMX. The labeled print works as the answer key.

What else would a Mexico geography quiz ask?

Usually borders and landmarks, and the detail lines cover both. Six states touch the United States, three touch Guatemala, and Quintana Roo is the one on the Belize border. Pico de Orizaba, the country's highest mountain at 5,636 meters, stands between Puebla and Veracruz.
