How it works
Twenty-seven shapes fill this Brazil states quiz: the 26 states and the Federal District around Brasília, grouped into the five official regions so you can learn one region at a time. The district is too small to tap, so it carries a numbered ring.
Read the full guide
Five regions instead of 27 shapes
The regions under Start from follow the five IBGE regions: North (7 states), Northeast (9), Central-West (3 states and the Federal District), Southeast (4) and South (3). Start with the South: three states stacked down the coast. Leave the Northeast for last: five of its nine states are under 100,000 square kilometers and crowd the eastern tip.
Capitals and one fact per state
This Brazilian states quiz never asks for capitals: it shows each one after your answer, with one checked fact. In two states the capital is not the largest city: Santa Catarina, where Joinville is bigger than Florianópolis, and Espírito Santo. A wrong tap shows the right state, and Practise the ones you missed replays them. Print blank gives a numbered map with 27 lines.
Mato Grosso do Sul sits below Mato Grosso. Rio Grande do Norte and Rio Grande do Sul are at opposite ends of the coast.
Ten shapes have no coast on this map, from Roraima at the top to Mato Grosso do Sul. Learn that inland block first.
Typed answers forgive missing accents, so Sao Paulo and Goias count. Federal District and Brasilia both work for the ringed shape.
Questions and answers
Does Brazil have 26 states or 27?
It has 26 states. The 27th shape, the Federal District, holds Brasília, the capital since April 21, 1960. It is not a state and cannot be divided into municipalities. The counter says 27 federative units, the official term for the states and the district together.
Can I use this Brazil map quiz to learn the regions?
Yes. A region picked under Start from limits the round to that region and zooms the map in. The North is the largest, about 45 percent of the country's area in 7 states. The Southeast's 4 states held 41.8 percent of the population at the 2022 census.
Which Brazilian state is the largest?
Amazonas, at 1,559,159 square kilometers, larger than Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay combined. Pará is second. Sergipe is the smallest state at 21,915 square kilometers. São Paulo has the most people, 44,411,238 at the 2022 census.
