Blank, numbered or named

The sheet opens blank. Numbered gives the seven states and Washington, D.C. a number each and a line to write on; Named writes the names in. Print this map prints the sheet on screen.

Which states are Mid-Atlantic

No list is official. This page uses the traditional one: seven states and Washington, D.C. The Census Bureau's Middle Atlantic division is only New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and it files the other four and the District under the South. If your class uses a shorter list, say which numbers to skip.

  • Washington, D.C. is too small to write on, so its number sits in a ring beside it.
  • Quiz yourself on this map turns the same sheet into a Mid Atlantic states quiz of eight questions.

Questions and answers

Which states are in the Mid-Atlantic?

In the traditional list, seven: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia, with Washington, D.C. Other lists are shorter; the Census Bureau's Middle Atlantic division has only the first three.

Is Washington, D.C. a state?

No. It is a federal district and the capital of the United States, on the Potomac River between Maryland and Virginia. It is numbered here because the traditional Mid-Atlantic list includes it.

Is New England part of the Mid-Atlantic?

No. New England is the six states northeast of New York. On this sheet they are plain land with no number.
