Blank, numbered or named

Blank prints every shape with nothing written; Numbered puts 1 on Accomack and 95 on York, in alphabetical order; Named prints every county name, and Print the answer key gives the list. The independent cities are drawn lighter and never numbered.

Virginia outline map with counties and cities

Virginia's 38 independent cities belong to no county. Richmond, the capital, is one of them, so it has no number here. Pittsylvania is the largest county and Arlington the smallest. Accomack and Northampton, the Eastern Shore, lie across Chesapeake Bay. The neighbors, Maryland, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee and North Carolina, are drawn without numbers.

  • As a blank Virginia county map for class, print Numbered and give each group one region, from Southwest Virginia to Tidewater.

Questions and answers

How many counties does Virginia have?

Ninety-five, from Accomack County to York County in alphabetical order. Virginia also has 38 independent cities, which the Census Bureau counts beside the counties, for 133 in all.

What county is Richmond in?

None. Richmond has been an independent city since 1871, so it belongs to no county. On this map it is one of the small shapes with no number.

Why are some shapes not numbered?

They are the independent cities, such as Norfolk, Roanoke and Alexandria. Each is separate from the county beside it, so it is drawn lighter, and this sheet numbers the counties only.

Which county of Virginia has the most people?

Fairfax County, outside Washington, D.C., has more people than any other county in Virginia. It is number 29 on the numbered sheet.
