How this list was compiled: Items made on 2026-10-01. THE REGION LINES ARE OLDER THAN TODAY'S: count and names are today's, the lines are the source's. The 19 regions and their English names were read on 2026-10-01 at Statistics Finland, classification Regions 2026 (https://data.stat.fi/api/classifications/v2/classifications/maakunta_1_20260101/classificationItems?content=data&meta=max&lang=en&format=json, 19 items), and compared with the list of ISO 3166-2 codes for Finland as Wikipedia prints it (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166-2:FI, 19 codes); every label is on both. The changes of region lines are listed at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regions_of_Finland (read 2026-10-01), and each was tested the same day against the source's polygons at the coordinates Wikipedia gives for the place. Twelve places lie in their old region on this drawing: Kuorevesi (changed region in 2001), Kangaslampi (2002), Länkipohja, the center of Längelmäki (2007), Himanka (2010), Kiikoinen and Suomenniemi (2013), Vaala (2016), and Heinävesi, Iitti, Isokyrö, Joroinen and Kuhmoinen (2021). Punkalaidun (2005) is drawn in its new region, so no single year fits the lines. The part of Ruotsinpyhtää that changed region in 2010 was not tested. Åland is drawn from the source's country layer, because its province layer has shapes for only 11 of Åland's 16 municipalities. The points of Päijät-Häme and Kymenlaakso stand about 18 units north and 8 units south of the points file's, inside their shapes, so that three names do not share a row on the Named sheet. How it works

This blank map of Finland opens on the plain outline of the country, with Sweden, Norway, Russia and Estonia as plain land around it. Switch Borders on for the 19 regions, drawn with older region lines.

A plain outline first

The sheet opens with nothing inside the outline but four large lakes: Saimaa, Päijänne, Oulujärvi and Inari. Press Print this map for a sheet to mark cities, rivers or a route on.

The 19 regions

Borders adds the 19 regions, from Lapland in the north to Åland, the islands in the southwest. Numbered and Named label them. The names are today's. The lines are older: about a dozen municipalities that changed region between 2001 and 2021 are drawn in their old region.

  • Typed answers without Finnish letters count in the quiz, and so do older English names such as Finland Proper for Southwest Finland.

Questions and answers

How many regions does Finland have?

Nineteen: 18 on the mainland and Åland, a group of islands in the southwest with its own parliament. Lapland, in the north, is the largest region and Åland the smallest.

Are the region borders on this map current?

The 19 regions and their names are today's. The lines are older. About a dozen municipalities that moved to a neighboring region between 2001 and 2021 are drawn in their old region, among them Heinävesi, Iitti, Isokyrö, Joroinen and Kuhmoinen, which moved in 2021.

What are the shapes cut out of the inside of Finland?

Four large lakes, drawn as open water: Saimaa in the southeast, Päijänne in the south, Oulujärvi farther north and Inari in Lapland. Smaller lakes are not drawn.
