A plain outline first
The sheet opens with nothing inside the outline but Lake Balaton. The seven neighboring countries are drawn as plain land without names. Press Print this map for a sheet to mark cities, rivers or a route on.
The counties and Budapest
Borders adds the 19 counties and Budapest, a small shape of its own in the middle of Pest County. Numbered and Named label them. The names are today's. The lines are older: the Keszthely area, at the west end of Lake Balaton, is drawn in Veszprém County and belongs to Zala County today.
- Typed answers without accents count in the quiz: Bekes, Fejer and Nograd are right, and so is the older name Csongrád for Csongrád-Csanád.
Questions and answers
How many counties does Hungary have?
Nineteen, plus the capital city, Budapest, which has the same rank as a county. This map numbers all 20. Bács-Kiskun, in the south, is the largest county and Komárom-Esztergom, on the northern border, the smallest.
Are the county borders on this map current?
The counties and their names are today's. The lines are older. The Keszthely area, by Lake Balaton, is drawn in Veszprém County and has been part of Zala County since the end of 1978. A few villages also sit in their old county.
Which county is Budapest in?
None. Budapest is a unit of its own, surrounded by Pest County. Pest County has its seat in Budapest all the same.
What is the lake on the map?
Lake Balaton, the largest lake in Central Europe. It lies in the west of Hungary and is drawn as open water.
Why does Csongrád-Csanád have a double name?
The county was called Csongrád until June 2020, when Csanád was added to its name. Both names count as right answers in the quiz.
