How this list was compiled: The 22 principal areas of Wales (11 counties and 11 county boroughs, since 1996), today's list. The count and every name were read on 2026-10-01 in the Welsh Government's list of local authorities (https://www.gov.wales/find-your-local-authority; the labels follow it) and at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principal_areas_of_Wales. The accepted Welsh names are those of the government's Welsh-language list (https://www.llyw.cymru/dod-o-hyd-ich-awdurdod-lleol). Some lines are older than today's. Tested the same day against the boundary data with Wikipedia's coordinates: Pentyrch and Creigiau (Cardiff) are drawn in Rhondda Cynon Taf; Ewenny, St Brides Major and Wick (Vale of Glamorgan) in Bridgend; Llansilin and Llangedwyn (Powys) in Wrexham; St Dogmaels and Clynderwen (both in Pembrokeshire since 2003) in Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire. Places within about a kilometer of a line, such as Pontarddulais, can also fall on the wrong side at this scale. The lines are not redrawn by hand. England is land that is not numbered or asked. How it works
This blank map of Wales opens on the plain outline of the country, with England drawn plain to the east. Switch Borders on for the 22 council areas, whose lines are older than today’s in places.

A plain outline first
The sheet opens with nothing inside the outline. The Isle of Anglesey is the island off the northwest corner. Press Print this map for a sheet to mark towns, rivers or mountains on.
The 22 council areas
Borders adds the areas; Numbered and Named label them. The names are today’s. Some of the lines are older, so a few villages near them are drawn in the area next door.
Welsh names count as typed answers in the quiz: Caerdydd for Cardiff, Abertawe for Swansea, Ynys Môn for the Isle of Anglesey.
Questions and answers
How many council areas does Wales have?
Twenty-two: eleven counties and eleven county boroughs, in place since 1996. Their formal name is principal areas, and the Welsh Government lists them as local authorities. This map numbers all 22.
Are the lines between the areas current?
The 22 areas and their names are today’s. Some lines are older: Pentyrch (Cardiff), Ewenny (Vale of Glamorgan), Llansilin (Powys), St Dogmaels (Pembrokeshire) and a few other villages are drawn in the area next door to their own.
What is the capital of Wales?
Cardiff, on the south coast. With Borders on, it is one of the small areas in the southeast.
What borders Wales?
England lies to the east. The Irish Sea is to the north and west, the Bristol Channel to the south and the Celtic Sea to the southwest. On this map England is drawn as plain land, without a name.
