How this list was compiled: State list, capitals and admission dates written for this site and checked on 2026-09-18 against https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_by_date_of_admission_to_the_Union and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_capitals_in_the_United_States. The four regions are the U.S. Census Bureau regions, https://www2.census.gov/geo/pdfs/maps-data/maps/reference/us_regdiv.pdf, checked the same day. Licence: own work
The drawing: Drawn for this site from the U.S. Census Bureau 2023 cartographic boundary file cb_2023_us_state_20m (scale 1:20,000,000), https://www2.census.gov/geo/tiger/GENZ2023/kml/cb_2023_us_state_20m.zip, downloaded 2026-09-18. Albers equal-area conic projection. Alaska is drawn at 35 percent of the scale of the other states and, like Hawaii, moved into an inset. Small islands are left out. How it works
This blank map of the US shows all 50 states, with Alaska and Hawaii in boxes at the lower left. Print it blank for labeling, numbered to write against, or named as the answer key.

Blank, numbered or named
The sheet opens blank. Choose Numbered to put a number on each of the 50 states, from 1 for Washington in the north-west, or Named for their names, then press Print this map; the answer key prints on its own sheet.
A map of the USA unlabeled, with small states ringed
Nine states are too small to write inside at this size, from Vermont and Rhode Island to Delaware and Maryland, and Hawaii in its box, so each has a ring joined by a line. The District of Columbia is not drawn.
For a first test, print Numbered and ask one region at a time: the 9 states of the Northeast, the 12 of the Midwest, the 16 of the South or the 13 of the West.
Questions and answers
How many states are on the map?
All 50. Alaska and Hawaii are moved into boxes at the lower left and drawn at a smaller scale, as on most school maps of the United States.
Which is the largest state?
Alaska, more than twice the size of Texas, the second largest. Rhode Island is the smallest.
Is Washington, D.C. on the map?
No. The District of Columbia is not a state, and it is too small to draw at this size; it lies on the Potomac River between Maryland and Virginia.
