How this list was compiled: The 50 cities are the dots of the drawing: the 50 largest places of the United States in Natural Earth's populated places (scale 1:10,000,000, version 5.1.2) by its field pop_max, which is the population of the urban area and not of the city inside its limits. Of two places closer than 0.75 degrees the smaller is not drawn, so that every dot can be tapped: Irvine and Long Beach beside Los Angeles, Baltimore beside Washington, Fort Lauderdale beside Miami, San Jose and Oakland beside San Francisco, Fort Worth beside Dallas, Providence beside Boston, Mesa beside Phoenix, Norfolk beside Virginia Beach, Hartford beside Bridgeport. The list is not a ranking by Census Bureau city estimates. The state of each city was read in the points file and in the opening of the city's Wikipedia article; each state capital in Wikipedia, List of capitals in the United States (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_capitals_in_the_United_States); all read 2026-10-01. The four rounds are the regions of the U.S. Census Bureau, by the state each city is in, as the points file groups them. Items made on 2026-10-01; names and accepted spellings are Natural Earth's, with the state added where the source has several places of one name. Licence: own work

How it works
This US cities map quiz asks 50 large cities as dots on a map of the states, from Boston to San Diego. A round stays inside one region, starting with the Northeast, where the dots sit closest together.

Which 50 cities, and by what count
The list is the 50 largest urban areas of the United States in the map data, Natural Earth version 5.1.2, which counts a city together with its suburbs. That is why Tampa and St. Louis rank higher here than in a list by city limits, and why no suburb is a dot.
Big cities that are not dots
A city too close to a bigger one is left out, so that every dot can be tapped: Baltimore beside Washington, San Jose and Oakland beside San Francisco, Fort Worth beside Dallas, Long Beach beside Los Angeles, Providence beside Boston.
Six dots carry a ring on a short line because a bigger city crowds them: Bridgeport, Sacramento, San Bernardino, Austin, Orlando and West Palm Beach.
Texas has four dots: Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Austin. Florida and California have five each.
Questions and answers
Why is Washington, D.C. in the round for the South?
The rounds are the four regions of the U.S. Census Bureau, which places the District of Columbia in the South. Richmond, Virginia Beach, Louisville and Tulsa are in that round for the same reason.
Are these the state capitals?
Some are. 13 of the 50 are state capitals, such as Boston, Atlanta and Phoenix, and Washington, D.C. is the national capital. The list under the map names each city's state and its capital. For all 50 capitals use the state capitals quiz.
Can I print a blank US map with cities?
Yes. Open More options and press Print blank: the state outlines print with a number at each dot and a line to write each city on. The print button beside it adds the answer key.
