How it works

This northeast states quiz draws the region on a map of its own, so Rhode Island and Connecticut are shapes you can tap, not specks. It asks one state at a time: all 9, the 6 New England states on a closer view, or the Middle Atlantic. The map prints blank or labeled.

The 9 states, and where New England ends

The page follows the U.S. Census Bureau, which puts 9 states in its Northeast. New England is Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont, a name the English explorer John Smith gave the region in 1616. The Middle Atlantic is New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

How a round works, and the New England round

In Find it, this northeast map quiz names a state and you tap its shape. Miss, and the right state lights up. Miss two, and Practise the 2 you missed asks both again. Name it lights a state, and you pick or type its name. Study writes every name on the map, and a tap shows the capital. Pick New England under Start from and this becomes a New England states quiz: six questions, zoomed in until Rhode Island is easy to tap. Print blank always numbers all 9, and Print labelled is the key.

  • Vermont and New Hampshire are wedges turned opposite ways. Vermont is widest at the top, New Hampshire at the bottom. The Connecticut River is the line between them, so Vermont is the one that touches New York.
  • Read southern New England as a block of three: Massachusetts across the top, Connecticut under its left half, Rhode Island under its right.
  • The Middle Atlantic hangs around one corner: New York on top, Pennsylvania the wide block to its southwest, New Jersey under New York on the coast.

Questions and answers

Why are Maryland, Delaware and Washington, D.C. not on this quiz?

The U.S. Census Bureau places all three in its South region. Some school lists draw the region wider, so a northeastern states quiz in class may count 11 states. Maryland and Delaware are asked on the Southeast page.

Is New York part of New England?

No. New York borders Vermont, Massachusetts and Connecticut by land, but the Census Bureau puts it in the Middle Atlantic. In the New England round, New York stays on the map beside Vermont, and a tap on it is not a miss.

Do I have to spell Massachusetts right?

Nearly. When you type a long name, one wrong, missing or swapped letter still counts. Postal codes count too, and so do Conn, Mass and Penn. MA is Massachusetts and ME is Maine, and each is marked wrong for the other.
