North 7

  1. Acre Capital: Rio Branco. The westernmost point of the country is here. Clocks run two hours behind Brasília. Brazil gained the land from Bolivia by the Treaty of Petrópolis in 1903, and it became a state in 1962.
  2. Amapá Capital: Macapá. It borders French Guiana and Suriname. It became a state in 1988. No road links it to any other Brazilian state.
  3. Amazonas Capital: Manaus, where the Negro and Solimões rivers meet. The largest state, at 1,559,159 square kilometers. Pico da Neblina, the highest mountain in Brazil, is here.
  4. Pará Capital: Belém, near the mouth of the Amazon. The second largest state. Marajó, an island of about 40,000 square kilometers, close to the size of Switzerland, belongs to it. It borders Guyana and Suriname.
  5. Rondônia Capital: Porto Velho, on the Madeira River. Named after the explorer Cândido Rondon. It was the Federal Territory of Guaporé from 1943 and took its present name in 1956. It borders Bolivia.
  6. Roraima Capital: Boa Vista, the only state capital entirely north of the equator. The northernmost and least populous state, with 636,707 people in 2022. A state since 1988. Monte Caburaí here is the northernmost point of Brazil.
  7. Tocantins Capital: Palmas, a city begun in 1989. The newest state, made in 1988 from the northern part of Goiás. Bananal Island and the Jalapão region are here.

Northeast 9

  1. Alagoas Capital: Maceió. The second smallest state, larger only than Sergipe. It was split from Pernambuco in 1817, and the capital moved to Maceió in 1839.
  2. Bahia Capital: Salvador, founded in 1549. It was the capital of colonial Brazil until 1763. Bahia has the longest coastline of any state, and Cabral landed at Porto Seguro in 1500.
  3. Ceará Capital: Fortaleza, the fourth most populous city in Brazil. Ceará was the first province to abolish slavery, on March 25, 1884.
  4. Maranhão Capital: São Luís, on an island between two bays. The French founded it in 1612 and were driven out in 1615. The dunes of Lençóis Maranhenses are in this state.
  5. Paraíba Capital: João Pessoa. The easternmost point of the mainland Americas is here. At Ponta do Seixas, on its coast.
  6. Pernambuco Capital: Recife. Olinda, the colonial capital, is a World Heritage Site. The islands of Fernando de Noronha have been part of the state since 1988.
  7. Piauí Capital: Teresina, the only Northeast capital not on the coast. Its 66 kilometers of coastline are the shortest of any coastal state. The Parnaíba River separates it from Maranhão.
  8. Rio Grande do Norte Capital: Natal. The state forms the northeastern corner of South America. Rocas Atoll, the only atoll in the South Atlantic, lies 260 kilometers northeast of Natal.
  9. Sergipe Capital: Aracaju. The smallest state, at 21,915 square kilometers. Only the Federal District is smaller.

Central-West 4

  1. Distrito Federal Home of Brasília, the national capital since April 21, 1960. It is not a state: it has the powers of both a state and a city and cannot be divided into municipalities. It was carved out of Goiás.
  2. Goiás Capital: Goiânia, a planned city begun in 1933. It took over as capital in 1937. The Federal District was carved out of Goiás in 1960, and its northern part became Tocantins in 1988.
  3. Mato Grosso Capital: Cuiabá. The name means thick bush. The third largest state, it reaches into the Amazon forest, the Cerrado and the Pantanal, and it is the largest soy producer in Brazil.
  4. Mato Grosso do Sul Capital: Campo Grande. It borders Paraguay and Bolivia. Part of the Pantanal wetland lies inside it. Created by a law of October 11, 1977 that took effect on January 1, 1979.

Southeast 4

  1. Espírito Santo Capital: Vitória, which stands on an island. It is not the largest city in the state. The islands of Trindade and Martim Vaz, far out in the Atlantic, belong to Espírito Santo.
  2. Minas Gerais Capital: Belo Horizonte. The name means General Mines. Named after the gold rush around Ouro Preto. Second in population, it has 853 municipalities, more than any other state.
  3. Rio de Janeiro Capital: Rio de Janeiro, the national capital from 1763 to 1960. The city then became a state of its own, Guanabara, which merged into this state in 1975.
  4. São Paulo Capital: São Paulo. The state with the most people. It had 44,411,238 at the 2022 census, more than one in five Brazilians. The Tropic of Capricorn passes at about the latitude of the capital.

South 3

  1. Paraná Capital: Curitiba, also its largest city. A province since 1853. Iguaçu National Park is on the border with Argentina, and the Itaipu Dam is on the border with Paraguay.
  2. Rio Grande do Sul Capital: Porto Alegre. The southernmost state, bordering Uruguay and Argentina. The home of gaucho culture. Arroio Chuí, at its tip, is the southernmost point of Brazil.
  3. Santa Catarina Capital: Florianópolis, founded on Santa Catarina Island. Joinville is larger, so this is one of only two states where the capital is not the largest city. Snow falls on its southern plateau in some winters.

An outline map of Brazil by state

Amazonas is the largest state at 1,559,159 km², larger than any country in Western Europe. The Federal District is the smallest unit, so its number sits in a ring beside it. São Paulo has the most people.
