How it works
This Venezuela states map quiz asks for all 23 states, the Capital District and the Federal Dependencies, 25 shapes in all. Four of them are too small to tap, so each carries a ring in the sea to the north.

Three rounds, each across the country
Each round asks eight or nine shapes from the west, the center and the east together. The west is Zulia and the eight states behind it. The center is crowded, from Carabobo on the coast east to Monagas. The rest is the northeast tip, the islands, the Orinoco Delta and the three largest states.
The capital is not always the big city
Bolívar is governed from Ciudad Bolívar, not from Ciudad Guayana, its largest city, and Nueva Esparta from La Asunción, not Porlamar. Show me the labels first writes every name on the map; tap a state there to read its capital.
Start at the lake. Zulia wraps around Lake Maracaibo, and Trujillo and Mérida touch its eastern and southern shores.
The three largest states are Bolívar and Amazonas, which fill the south, and Apure, the long shape to their west.
Questions and answers
How many states does Venezuela have?
Twenty-three. The map has 25 shapes because the Capital District and the Federal Dependencies, a scatter of Caribbean islands, are drawn and asked too. Venezuela's statistics office lists the same 25.
Which state of Venezuela has the most people?
Zulia, in the northwest, with about 3.7 million people in the 2011 census. Bolívar, in the southeast, is the largest by area, and Nueva Esparta, the island state, is the smallest.
Is Caracas a state?
No. About half of Caracas lies in the Capital District, a small shape between the states of La Guaira and Miranda. It is asked here like a state.
Is the Essequibo region shown as part of Venezuela?
Some borders on this map are disputed. Venezuela claims all land west of the Essequibo, which Guyana governs. The map follows Natural Earth, a public-domain map source, draws that land with Guyana and does not take a side. It is shown but not asked.
