Two pairs that sound alike
Windham and Windsor are neighbors on the New Hampshire side: Windham is the state's southeast corner and Windsor the larger shape above it. Orange and Orleans do not touch: Orleans is on the Canadian line, Orange halfway down the east side, and Caledonia lies between them.
The Northeast Kingdom and the two long sides
Essex, Orleans and Caledonia, the three counties in the northeast corner, are the ones usually called the Northeast Kingdom. Five counties face New Hampshire and five face New York, so only four touch neither state: Franklin, Lamoille, Orleans and Washington. Type Grand Isle or Grand Isle County; either is right.
- Montpelier, the capital, is in Washington County, which lies between Chittenden and Caledonia and has five neighbors.
