How it works

This Maryland counties map quiz names one place at a time, Garrett or Talbot or Wicomico, to tap on a blank map. Maryland has 23 counties, and Baltimore city, which belongs to none of them, is asked like one.

Two shapes named Baltimore

Baltimore city is the smallest shape on the map, and Baltimore County is the much larger one just north of it. They are separate governments: the Maryland State Archives counts 23 counties and Baltimore City as the state's 24 main local jurisdictions, the city on a par with a county since the constitution of 1851. So read the second word before you tap.

From the western tip to the bay

Garrett County is the far western tip, with Allegany and Washington counties in a row to its east, and Frederick is the largest shape. Chesapeake Bay splits the rest of the map in two. If you type a name, Queen Anne's is as good as Queen Anne's County, and Saint Mary's is taken for St. Mary's.

  • Annapolis, the capital, is in Anne Arundel County, the shape just south of Baltimore city.

Questions and answers

Which Maryland county names are also in Virginia?

Five: Caroline, Carroll, Frederick, Montgomery and Washington. Pennsylvania shares Montgomery, Somerset and Washington with Maryland, Delaware shares Kent, and West Virginia shares none. Here every one is the Maryland county.

Which Maryland county has the fewest people?

Kent County, with about 19,600 people in the Census Bureau's estimate for 2025. Montgomery County has the most, a little over one million.

Is Washington, D.C. on the map?

It is drawn as plain land with nothing to tap, like Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Delaware around the edges. The quiz asks only Maryland's 23 counties and Baltimore city.
