How it works
To label the counties of Alabama on the map, tap each one as it is named: Jefferson around Birmingham, Tuscaloosa in the west, Montgomery near the middle. All 67 are asked, and the blank map prints for paper.

The same names next door
Escambia County, Alabama, touches Escambia County, Florida: one name on both sides of the state line. Georgia has 31 of Alabama's county names, Mississippi and Tennessee 23 each, and Florida 12. Eight are in all four neighbors: Clay, Franklin, Jackson, Jefferson, Madison, Marion, Monroe and Washington.
Names that blur together
Coosa has Talladega on one side and Tallapoosa on another, just east of the middle of the map. Five names begin with Ma: Macon, Madison, Marengo, Marion and Marshall, three in the north and two across the middle. A typed answer needs no County after it: Etowah alone is right, and so is Saint Clair spelled out for St. Clair.
The capital shares its county's name: Montgomery is in Montgomery County, which touches seven other counties.
Three counties touch two other states: Lauderdale in the northwest corner, Jackson in the northeast and Houston in the southeast.
Questions and answers
What is the smallest county in Alabama?
Etowah County, by land area, in the northeast around Gadsden, its seat. No shape on this map is smaller. DeKalb, Cherokee, Calhoun, St. Clair, Blount and Marshall counties lie around it.
Which county in Alabama has the smallest population?
Greene County, in the west. The Census Bureau's estimate for July 2025 gives it 7,067 people and Perry County, the next smallest, 7,425. No other county is under 9,000.
Which Alabama counties border Florida?
Five, along the bottom of the map from west to east: Baldwin, Escambia, Covington, Geneva and Houston. Mobile County, on the Gulf beside Baldwin, is not a sixth: its only neighbors outside the state are in Mississippi.
Who is DeKalb County, Alabama named after?
Johann de Kalb, a general of the Revolutionary War. The county, on the Georgia line in the northeast, is spelled DeKalb: one word with a capital K, as the Census Bureau's county list has it.
