How it works

This Louisiana parish map quiz names one parish at a time, Winn or St. Tammany or Caddo, for you to tap on a blank map. Louisiana has 64 of them, and nothing on the map is called a county.

Pairs, saints and look-alikes

Baton Rouge, Carroll and Feliciana each come as an East and a West, side by side, so the question is which half. Jefferson Parish touches Orleans in the southeast; Jefferson Davis Parish is far off in the southwest. Nine names begin with St., and if you type them, Saint Tammany is as good as St. Tammany Parish.

Shapes to look twice at

West Baton Rouge is the smallest shape and Cameron, in the southwest corner, the largest. St. Martin Parish is drawn in two parts with Iberia Parish between them. Texas, Arkansas and Mississippi lie around the map as plain land, with nothing to tap.

  • Start from East Baton Rouge: it holds Baton Rouge, the capital, and more people than any other parish.

Questions and answers

What parish is New Orleans in?

Orleans Parish. The city fills the whole parish, so the Census Bureau counts the same people for both. On this map it is a small shape in the southeast, touching Jefferson Parish.

Is a parish the same as a county?

On a map, yes. The Census Bureau's glossary says the divisions most states call counties are known in Louisiana as parishes, and its county list holds all 64. No other state in that list has a parish.

Is Jefferson Davis Parish in Louisiana or Mississippi?

Louisiana has Jefferson Davis Parish and Mississippi has a Jefferson Davis County. Ten more names are spelled the same in both states, Claiborne, Lafayette and Webster among them. By the same count Arkansas shares ten names with Louisiana and Texas nine.

Which Louisiana parish has the fewest people?

Tensas Parish, in the northeast, in the Census Bureau's estimates for 2025. Cameron Parish comes next, though it is the largest shape on this map.
