What the map draws
Queensland (north), Victoria (south) and South Australia (west) are plain land, without numbers. The Australian Capital Territory is the small area enclosed in the southeast. The Murrumbidgee, the river of Wagga Wagga, has no line of its own: the map source draws only its last stretch, as the end of the Lachlan's line down to the Murray.
- Along the south, the Murray River and the border with Victoria run together as one line on the map.
- The number of Dubbo stands below its dot on a short line, because the town lies on the Macquarie River.
Questions and answers
What is the capital of New South Wales?
Sydney, on the east coast. It is Australia’s most populous city too.
What borders New South Wales?
Queensland (north), Victoria (south) and South Australia (west), with the Coral Sea and the Tasman Sea to the east. The Australian Capital Territory is enclosed inside the state.
Which rivers are on the map?
Four. The Murray runs along the border with Victoria. The Darling crosses the west and joins the Murray at Wentworth. The Lachlan runs west across the middle, and the Macquarie rises near Bathurst and passes Dubbo.
Is Lord Howe Island on the map?
No. Lord Howe Island is part of New South Wales, but it lies far out in the Tasman Sea, beyond the edge of this sheet.
