How this list was compiled: Items made on 2026-10-01. The map source has no unit below the state, so the sheet numbers the state, its neighbors where it has them, and the land areas, waters and places listed here. Every name was read on 2026-10-01 in the Composite Gazetteer of Australia (https://placenames.fsdf.org.au/, the official names of the state and territory naming authorities, read through its search service) (authority QLD: Brisbane, Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville, Cairns and Mount Isa as population centers; Cape York Peninsula; K'gari; Mornington Island; Torres Strait; Mitchell River; Coral Sea under NSW and Gulf of Carpentaria under NT), and in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queensland (Brisbane as capital, the towns, the three neighbors, Cape York Peninsula, the Coral Sea, the Great Barrier Reef, the Gulf of Carpentaria, Torres Strait, K'gari (Fraser Island)) with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitchell_River_(Queensland) (flows northwest to the Gulf of Carpentaria) and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%27gari. The Great Barrier Reef is named by the Queensland Government (https://www.qld.gov.au/environment/coasts-waterways/reef). Geoscience Australia's landform and dimension tables (https://www.ga.gov.au/scientific-topics/national-location-information/landforms/islands, .../landforms/deserts, .../landforms/largest-waterbodies, .../landforms/longest-rivers, .../dimensions/area-of-australia-states-and-territories) list K'gari, the world's largest sand island, and Mornington among the largest islands. The map source calls K'gari by its former name, Fraser Island, which is accepted. Licence: public domain (Natural Earth terms of use: https://www.naturalearthdata.com/about/terms-of-use/)
