How this list was compiled: Items made on 2026-10-01. The map source has no unit below the state, so the sheet numbers the state, its neighbors where it has them, and the land areas, waters and places listed here. Every name was read on 2026-10-01 in the Composite Gazetteer of Australia (https://placenames.fsdf.org.au/, the official names of the state and territory naming authorities, read through its search service), authority SA (Adelaide, Mount Gambier, Whyalla, Port Lincoln and Ceduna; Kangaroo Island; Flinders Ranges; Lake Eyre and Kati Thanda; Lake Torrens; Lake Gairdner; Lake Frome; River Murray; Great Australian Bight; Spencer Gulf; Gulf St Vincent), and in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Australia (the five neighbors and the sentence that the state borders every other mainland state, Adelaide as capital, the towns, Kangaroo Island, the Flinders Ranges, the four lakes, Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre, the Murray, the Bight, the two gulfs) with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ceduna,_South_Australia. Geoscience Australia's landform and dimension tables (https://www.ga.gov.au/scientific-topics/national-location-information/landforms/islands, .../landforms/deserts, .../landforms/largest-waterbodies, .../landforms/longest-rivers, .../dimensions/area-of-australia-states-and-territories) list Kangaroo among the largest islands and Lake Eyre, Lake Torrens and Lake Gairdner as the largest salt lakes, and name the river River Murray in South Australia. The label Murray River is the one this site's other maps use for the same line; River Murray is accepted. The map source's water area named Gulf St Vincent also covers Spencer Gulf, so it is left off the drawing and neither gulf is numbered. The deserts and the Nullarbor Plain, which cross the state border, are not drawn. Licence: public domain (Natural Earth terms of use: https://www.naturalearthdata.com/about/terms-of-use/)

What the map draws
Western Australia is to the west, the Northern Territory and Queensland to the north, New South Wales and Victoria to the east. The Flinders Ranges have a faint edge: a rough area, not an exact limit. Faint lines over the water are where the map source ends the Bight. Spencer Gulf and Gulf St Vincent are water with no number: the map source has no shape for each.
