From above 10

  1. Cerebral hemisphere One of two long smooth bodies, narrow in front and wider behind. A deep groove runs between the two.
  2. Optic lobe One of two large round bodies in front of the cerebellum. Together they are the widest part of the brain.
  3. Cerebellum A narrow band across the brain, just behind the optic lobes. In the frog it is very small.
  4. Medulla oblongata The hind part of the brain, a widening of the spinal cord. Several pairs of cranial nerves leave its sides.
  5. Olfactory lobe The front end of the brain, fused with its partner. The nerves of smell begin here.
  6. Olfactory nerve The first cranial nerve. It runs forward from the olfactory lobe to the nose.
  7. Diencephalon The part between the hemispheres and the optic lobes. It is also called the thalamencephalon.
  8. Pineal body A small outgrowth on the roof of the diencephalon. It is also called the epiphysis.
  9. Fourth ventricle A three-cornered hollow on top of the medulla. Its thin roof carries a web of blood vessels, the choroid plexus.
  10. Spinal cord The cord that runs back from the brain inside the backbone.

From below 5

  1. Optic nerve The nerve of sight, from the eye. All of its fibers cross to the other side of the brain.
  2. Optic chiasm The place where the two optic nerves cross. It lies under the diencephalon.
  3. Infundibulum A flat two-lobed swelling just behind the optic chiasm.
  4. Pituitary body A small body behind the infundibulum and partly covered by it. It is also called the hypophysis.
  5. Cranial nerves Nerves that leave the brain itself; a frog has ten pairs. Most of them leave from the sides of the medulla.

How it works

To label the frog brain diagram, write a name on the line for each number. Numbers 1 to 10 are on the view from above; 11 to 15 are on the underside. The front is at the left in both.

Frog brain labeling word bank

Fifteen names, in alphabetical order: cerebellum, cerebral hemisphere, cranial nerves, diencephalon, fourth ventricle, infundibulum, medulla oblongata, olfactory lobe, olfactory nerve, optic chiasm, optic lobe, optic nerve, pineal body, pituitary body, spinal cord.

Where each number ends

From above, the top row reads 6, 1, 8, 2, 4: a thin strand at the far left, a long body, the dark dot, a round body, the tapering part. The bottom row reads 5, 7, 3, 9, 10: the small rounded front end, the patch round the dot, the narrow band, the three-cornered hollow, the cord. From below, 11 ends on a band and 12 where the two bands cross; 13 is the two-lobed body, 14 the oval behind it, 15 one of the stubs.

  • When marking, cerebrum is right on line 1, olfactory bulb on line 5 and optic chiasma on line 12.
  • The stubs on the upper drawing are the same nerve roots as number 15. They have no number there.

Questions and answers

What are the three divisions of a frog's brain?

Forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain. The forebrain becomes the cerebral hemispheres, the olfactory lobes and the diencephalon: 1, 5 and 7 on the worksheet. The midbrain carries the optic lobes, 2. The hindbrain forms the cerebellum and the medulla oblongata, 3 and 4.

What is the largest part of a frog's brain?

The cerebral hemispheres, number 1. They start as a pair of pouches on the front wall of the forebrain and grow into the largest part of the brain.

What is the brow spot on a frog?

A light mark on top of the head, in front of the eyes. In the embryo the pineal body, number 8, grows up from the brain's roof to the skin. Its tip is cut off when the skull bones form, and stays as the spot.

Does the frog brain worksheet have an answer key?

Yes. The key prints both views with their numbers over the fifteen names in order, cerebral hemisphere first and cranial nerves last.
