How it works

To label the parts of a phone, write a name on the line for each number. The bottom edge is drawn again, enlarged, under the front view, so its holes and slots can be told apart.

Phone worksheet word bank

In alphabetical order, to copy onto the board: charging port, flash, front camera, microphone, rear cameras, side button, SIM tray, speaker, touchscreen, volume buttons.

The numbers that get swapped

Four sit in a row on the bottom edge. The SIM tray is the slot with a pinhole, the microphone the single small hole, the charging port the oval socket and the speaker the row of holes. On the front, the two keys on the left edge are the volume buttons and the one key on the right edge is the side button. On the back, the small light beside the lenses is the flash.

  • A class sheet may print power button for side button, display for touchscreen and front-facing camera for front camera.
  • Makers place buttons and ports differently, so a real phone may not match this drawing part for part.
  • Not on the sheet: the earpiece, the proximity and light sensor, and what is inside the case, such as the battery.

Questions and answers

What does SIM stand for?

Subscriber identity module. The SIM card is a small chip that identifies the phone's user to the network. A user can change phones by moving the card from one to the other, unless a SIM lock prevents it.

Why do phones have more than one rear camera?

Each camera is made for a different purpose, such as a wide angle or a telephoto view. Few phones have optical zoom, and makers get round that in part by adding rear cameras with fixed levels of magnification.

Why does the camera stick out of the back of a phone?

A thin phone has little depth for an image sensor and its lenses, so the rear cameras are often housed in a bump that is thicker than the rest of the phone.

What is the difference between a phone and a smartphone?

A smartphone combines the functions of a traditional mobile phone with advanced computing, and it typically has a touchscreen. The worksheet draws a smartphone, which is why its largest part is the touchscreen.
