Front 5

  1. Screen The screen shows the picture. On most TVs today it is a flat LCD or OLED panel.
  2. Stand The stand holds the TV upright on a table or shelf. It comes off when the TV is hung on a wall.
  3. Remote sensor Picks up the signal from the remote control. The remote has to point toward it. It is also called the IR sensor.
  4. Power indicator A small light showing whether the TV is on or in standby.
  5. Remote control The remote control has buttons for power, volume, channels and the input. It runs on batteries and signals the TV through the remote sensor.

Back 4

  1. Speakers The speakers are built into the TV and play the sound. Where they sit differs from TV to TV.
  2. Control buttons The buttons on the TV itself: power, volume, channel, menu and input. They sit on the back or the side of the TV.
  3. VESA screw holes A wall bracket screws into these four holes. They are spaced to the VESA standard, so a VESA bracket of the same size fits.
  4. Power cord The power cord carries electricity from the wall outlet to the TV.

Ports 5

  1. HDMI ports An HDMI cable carries digital picture and sound through one plug. It comes from a device, such as a game console or a set-top box.
  2. USB ports A USB drive plugs in here. The TV can then show the photos or play the music and video files on it.
  3. Ethernet port A network cable from the home router plugs in here. It gives a wired internet connection. It is often marked LAN.
  4. Optical audio output Sends digital sound through an optical cable. It goes to a sound bar or an audio receiver.
  5. Antenna input The coaxial cable screws on here and brings in the broadcast channels. It comes from an antenna or a cable TV outlet.

How it works

These are the parts of a TV that you can see and touch, on a plain flat-panel set. The first view is the front, the second is the back, and the third shows the row of ports enlarged.

Front, back, then ports

On the front are the screen, the stand, the remote sensor and the power indicator, with the remote control beside the TV. The back has the speakers, the control buttons, four VESA screw holes for a wall bracket and the power cord. The ports come last: HDMI ports for picture and sound, USB ports, an Ethernet port, an optical audio output and the antenna input.

  • Ports have their names printed beside them on a real TV. The drawing leaves the lettering off, so go by shape.

Questions and answers

What are the parts of a TV called?

Outside: the screen, the stand, the remote sensor, the power indicator, the speakers, the control buttons and the power cord. On the back are the ports: HDMI, USB, Ethernet, optical audio and the antenna input.

What are the ports on the back of a TV?

HDMI ports take picture and sound from other devices. USB ports take a drive with photos or video. The antenna input takes a coaxial cable. The Ethernet port takes a network cable, and the optical output sends sound to a sound bar.

Where is the remote sensor on a TV?

On the front of the TV, often next to the power indicator. On this drawing it is the small window in the strip under the screen. The remote control has to point toward it.

What are the four holes on the back of a TV for?

They are VESA screw holes. A wall bracket screws into them, so the TV can hang on a wall without its stand.
