How this list was compiled: Every name checked on 2026-09-30, a name kept only where two independent sources use it. (1) GCFGlobal, Internet Basics: Using a Web Browser, read in the Internet Archive copy of 20 May 2024, http://web.archive.org/web/20240520092827/https://edu.gcfglobal.org/en/internetbasics/using-a-web-browser/1/ (address bar; Back and Forward buttons; the Refresh button reloads the current page; tabs in one browser window, closed with the X, a new blank tab from the button to the right of the open tabs; bookmarks, also known as favorites, made with the star; history and settings from the icon in the upper right corner; all browsers work in basically the same way). (2) Wikipedia, text only: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_browser (tabs, back and forward buttons, a refresh or reload button, the address bar, with the search bar merged into it in most browsers, bookmarks, menu), https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tab_(interface) , https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Address_bar (also location bar or URL bar), https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bookmark_(World_Wide_Web) (the star icon; the bookmarks bar, or favorites bar) and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrollbar . (3) A browser maker's help pages, https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/188842 and https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/2391819 (address bar, bookmark, bookmarks bar, tab strip, new tab, closing a tab, the menu at the top right). How it works

To label the parts of a web browser, write a name on the line for each number. The made-up window is drawn twice: the tabs and toolbar large, and under them the full window showing a page.

Web browser worksheet word bank

In alphabetical order, to copy onto the board: address bar, back button, bookmark button, bookmarks bar, close button, forward button, menu button, new tab button, reload button, scroll bar, tab, web page.

The buttons that get swapped

Three round buttons sit in a row. The arrow pointing left is the back button, the arrow pointing right the forward button, and the curled arrow the reload button. The star is the bookmark button; the bookmarks bar is the row of saved pages under the toolbar. The X on the front tab is the close button; the plus sign beside the tabs is the new tab button.

  • A class sheet may print refresh button for reload button, URL bar or location bar for address bar, and favorites for bookmarks.
  • The window copies no program and has no words on it, so each button is told by its shape.
  • Not on the sheet: the home button, which many browsers hide, and the window's own close, minimize and maximize buttons.

Questions and answers

What is a web browser?

An application for visiting websites. When you ask for a page, the browser fetches its files from a web server and shows the page on your screen.

Is a web browser the same as a search engine?

No, though the two are often confused. A browser is the application that shows pages. A search engine is a website that gives links to other websites, and you open it in a browser.

Where is the stop button on a browser?

In most browsers it is merged with the reload button, so the worksheet has one number for both. The stop button cancels a page that is still loading.

What is the part of a scroll bar that moves called?

The thumb. It is dragged along the track, also called the trough, to move the page up and down. On this drawing the thumb is the dark bar at the top of the strip.
