How it works

This macromolecules quiz has 40 questions on the four biological macromolecules: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids. It asks what each is made of, what it does, and how it is built and broken down.

Three sets

Building blocks pairs each macromolecule with its monomer and elements. What each one does covers starch, glycogen, cellulose, phospholipids, enzymes and DNA. Building and breaking asks about dehydration, hydrolysis and the bonds that join the units.

Before a biology test

Start with Building blocks: the other two sets lean on the monomers. Missed questions come back until you get them right. Print, with a tick on With answer key, gives a paper version for class review.

  • Monomers: monosaccharides make carbohydrates, amino acids make proteins, nucleotides make nucleic acids; fats are glycerol plus fatty acids.
  • Dehydration joins two units and releases water; hydrolysis adds water and splits them. Digesting proteins into amino acids is hydrolysis.

Questions and answers

What are the four macromolecules?

Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids. Carbohydrates and lipids store energy and build structures, proteins do most of the cell's work, and nucleic acids carry genetic information.

What are the monomers of the four macromolecules?

Monosaccharides for carbohydrates, amino acids for proteins, and nucleotides for nucleic acids. Lipids are not true polymers; a fat is glycerol joined to three fatty acids.

Which macromolecules contain nitrogen or phosphorus?

Proteins always contain nitrogen, in each amino acid's amino group. Nucleic acids contain both nitrogen, in the bases, and phosphorus, in the phosphate groups. Simple carbohydrates hold only carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.
