How this list was compiled: Where each note sits on the grand staff: Robert Hutchinson, Music Theory for the 21st-Century Classroom, sections 1.2 Notation and 1.3 Octave Registers, https://musictheory.pugetsound.edu/mt21c/Notation.html and OctaveRegisters.html, read 2026-10-01 (treble lines E, G, B, D, F and spaces F, A, C, E; the bass clef; middle C on the ledger line below the treble staff and above the bass staff; the grand staff is a treble and a bass staff joined together, and middle C is written in one staff or the other); checked against Karl W. Gehrkens, Music Notation and Terminology (1914, public domain), sections 13 to 17, Project Gutenberg ebook 19499, read 2026-10-01 (the G clef makes the second line G; the F clef makes the fourth line of the bass staff the first F below middle C; the great staff) and Wikipedia, Clef, read 2026-10-01. Licence: own work

The drawing: Drawn for this site on 2026-10-01 from plain curves and lines: clefs, note heads, stems and ledger lines are own work, and each note is placed by the script from its pitch name and the clef's bottom line. No font and nothing traced. Licence: own work

How it works

This note reading quiz covers both clefs. The first set is a music notes quiz for beginners: the nine notes around middle C. Then come the line notes, the space notes and the ledger lines of the grand staff.

How to name a note on either staff

Read the clef first. On the treble staff the lines are E, G, B, D, F and the spaces F, A, C, E; on the bass staff the lines are G, B, D, F, A and the spaces A, C, E, G. Middle C sits on a ledger line between the two staves, below the treble staff or above the bass staff.

Print it as a worksheet

When a round ends, press Print blank for a naming music notes worksheet: every grand staff with a number under each note and a line for each answer. The second print button gives the key. Save either as a treble and bass clef notes pdf from the print box. Both are in More options before a round.

  • In a sheet music quiz the clef decides everything: the same line is G in one clef and B in the other.
  • After a round, one press replays only the notes you missed.

Questions and answers

How to memorize music notes?

Learn one landmark for each clef: the treble clef curls around G, and the two dots of the bass clef sit either side of F. Count letters up or down from there, then drill a set until you no longer count.

Is this note quiz for beginners?

Yes. The first set has only the nine notes around middle C, from the F below it to the G above it. A round is twelve notes or fewer, and a wrong answer shows the right letter at once.

Can I use it as music note flashcards?

Yes. Each question works like a card: a note on the staff in front, its letter behind. Press Show me the labels first to see every answer, or print the key.

Is there a music notes cheat sheet?

Yes. The printed key shows all four grand staves with the letter under every note; it is also the key to the note naming worksheets. The list under the tool says which staff and which line or space each note is on.
