How this list was compiled: Where each note sits on the bass staff: Karl W. Gehrkens, Music Notation and Terminology (1914, public domain), sections 13 to 17, Project Gutenberg ebook 19499, read 2026-10-01 (the F clef shows that the fourth line of the bass staff is the first F below middle C and the fifth line the first A below middle C; leger lines); checked against Robert Hutchinson, Music Theory for the 21st-Century Classroom, sections 1.2 Notation and 1.3 Octave Registers, https://musictheory.pugetsound.edu/mt21c/Notation.html and OctaveRegisters.html, read 2026-10-01 (the F clef with its dots around the second line from the top makes the bass clef; middle C is on the ledger line above the bass staff); and Wikipedia, Clef (the bass clef is the F-clef on the fourth line), read 2026-10-01. Every other note follows by counting the letters A to G up or down from the F line, one for each line or space. Licence: own work

The drawing: Drawn for this site on 2026-10-01 from plain curves and lines: clefs, note heads, stems and ledger lines are own work, and each note is placed by the script from its pitch name and the clef's bottom line. No font and nothing traced. Licence: own work

How it works

One landscape page of bass clef practice: thirty-eight notes in four parts. Lines and spaces mixed, lines only, spaces only, and ledger lines up to middle C. Print the page, or quiz yourself on it.

Reading bass clef, one step at a time

Start from the clef: its two dots sit either side of the fourth line, and that line is F. Count the letters A to G up or down from there, one for every line or space. The five lines read G, B, D, F, A from the bottom and the four spaces read A, C, E, G. Middle C sits on a short ledger line above the staff.

Print it blank, numbered or as a key

Press Print this worksheet. Blank leaves room to write each letter under its note. Numbered puts a number under every note and adds a numbered line for each answer. Named prints the bass clef notes labeled, as the key. For bass clef worksheets pdf, choose Save as PDF in the print box.

  • A saying helps: Good Boys Do Fine Always for the lines, All Cows Eat Grass for the spaces.
  • The Numbered sheet works as a bass clef test: collect it and mark it against the key.
  • For bass clef sight reading, drill the mixed part until every letter comes at once; this page has notes to name, not tunes to play.

Questions and answers

What are all the bass clef notes?

From the bottom up, the five lines are G, B, D, F and A, and the four spaces are A, C, E and G. Just below the staff come F and then E; just above it come B and then middle C.

How to memorize bass clef notes?

Learn one landmark first: the line between the clef's two dots is F. Then say the lines, G B D F A, and the spaces, A C E G, from the bottom. Name the mixed part of the sheet until you stop counting.

Is there a bass clef notes chart with the answers?

Yes. Pick Named, or press Print the answer key: every note on the sheet has its letter under it. The list below the tool also says which line or space each note is on.

Can I use it as a bass clef quiz?

Yes. Press Quiz yourself on this worksheet. One note lights and you pick its letter from four choices, one part of the sheet at a time.

Where is middle C in the bass clef?

On the first ledger line above the staff. The treble staff writes the same note on the first ledger line below it.
