Start here: 4 main parts 4

  1. Window On most cars it winds or powers down into the door. It is the side window glass.
  2. Door handle The handles outside and inside that open the latch. You pull or lift them towards you rather than push.
  3. Hinges Hold the door to the car, on the front edge. They set the path it swings through.
  4. Latch The catch in the rear edge of the door. It grips the striker to hold the door closed. It can be locked.

How it closes: 4 3

  1. Striker The fixed loop on the door pillar that the latch closes onto.
  2. Pillar The upright part of the car's body the door closes against. The one behind the front door is the B pillar.
  3. Door switch A small switch in the door frame. It tells the car the door is open, for example to turn on the interior light.

Inside the door: 3 3

  1. Door card The trim panel on the inside of the door. It has the handle, armrest and pockets. In American English it is the door panel.
  2. Lock button The button on the inside of the door that locks it. Many cars also lock their doors by power, often from a remote.
  3. Storage pocket The storage compartment along the bottom of the door card.

How this list was compiled: Read 2026-09-27. (1) Wikipedia, Car door, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car_door : parts listed as the door card (door panel in American English), door handle, door switch, glass window, pillar, power door locks (which can work by remote) and interior storage compartment; doors held closed by latches that may be locked; handles that are pulled, lifted or tugged rather than pushed. (2) 49 CFR 571.206, Door locks and door retention components, via Cornell LII, https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/49/571.206 : the door system is the door, latch, striker, hinges and other retention components; the latch keeps the door closed, the fork-bolt of the latch engages the striker, and the hinge positions the door and controls its swing. How it closes

The door swings on hinges on its front edge. When it shuts, the latch in its rear edge grips the striker, a loop on the pillar. A door switch on the pillar tells the car the door is open.

Inside

The inside is covered by the door card, the trim panel with the inside handle, armrest and storage pocket. The lock button on the sill locks the latch.

  • Car door handles are pulled or lifted, never pushed: a pushed button could open the door if something struck the car.
