How it works
The parts of a division on one example written three ways: across with the division sign, as a fraction, and as long division. The same four numbers sit in a different place each time.

The four numbers
The dividend is the number being divided, 85. The divisor is what you divide by, 4. The quotient is the answer, 21, and the remainder is what is left over, 1, because 4 × 21 + 1 = 85.
Three ways to write it
Across, the division sign sits between the dividend and divisor. As a fraction, the dividend goes over the fraction bar and the divisor under it. In long division the divisor sits outside the bracket, the dividend inside, and the quotient on top.
- Check any division by multiplying back: quotient × divisor + remainder = dividend.
Questions and answers
What is the difference between the dividend and the divisor?
The dividend is the number being divided and the divisor is the number you divide it by. In 85 ÷ 4, the dividend is 85 and the divisor is 4.
What is the answer to a division called?
The quotient. If the divisor does not go in exactly, what is left over is the remainder.
Where does each number go in long division?
The divisor goes outside the bracket on the left, the dividend inside it, and the quotient on top of the bracket.
