Show the list

Start here: the 4 numbers 4

  1. Dividend What is being divided: 85 here. It comes first across, on top of a fraction, and inside the bracket in long division.
  2. Divisor The number the dividend is divided by: 4 here. It comes after the sign, under the fraction bar, and outside the bracket.
  3. Quotient The result of the division: 21 here. It comes after the equals sign, or above the bracket in long division.
  4. Remainder What is left when the divisor does not go in exactly. 85 = 4 × 21 + 1, so the remainder is 1. It is written after an r.

The three signs 3

  1. Division sign The ÷ sign, also called the obelus, used mostly in elementary arithmetic.
  2. Fraction bar The horizontal line between the dividend on top and the divisor below. 85 over 4 means 85 divided by 4.
  3. Division bracket The long division symbol. The divisor sits outside, the dividend inside, and the quotient on top.

How this list was compiled: Read 2026-09-26. Wikipedia, Division (mathematics), https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Division_(mathematics) : what is divided is the dividend, divided by the divisor, the result the quotient; division with remainder giving an integer quotient and a remainder; the division sign (÷, also known as obelus), common in elementary arithmetic; the dividend over the divisor, split by a line called a fraction bar; the long division notation with the divisor outside the bracket. The example is checked: 4 × 21 + 1 = 85. Licence: own work

How it works

The printable fill in the blank labels for dividend, divisor, quotient and remainder sit on one problem, 85 ÷ 4 = 21 r 1, drawn in a row, then as 85 over 4, then as long division with the 4 outside the bracket.

The word bank, in the order of the lines

Along the top row, left to right: dividend, division sign, divisor, quotient, remainder. The line at the lower left is the fraction bar and the line at the lower right is the division bracket. On the numbered copy the four numbers are 1 to 4 and the three signs 5 to 7.

Labeling dividend, divisor, quotient and remainder in all three

Each of the four numbers has one line, in the top row. The fraction and the long division repeat the numbers without lines. To label all three, write the names beside them: four on the long division and two on the fraction, which shows no quotient or remainder.

  • Dividend and divisor start with the same four letters. Check the ending before writing either name in.
  • Division is not commutative: 85 ÷ 4 and 4 ÷ 85 are different problems, so the first two names cannot trade places.

Questions and answers

Is it remainder or reminder?

Remainder, with an a: the part of the dividend that remains after dividing. Reminder, without the a, is a different word and names no part of a division.

Is the dividend the numerator or the denominator?

The numerator. When a division is written as a fraction, the dividend is the number on top, the numerator, and the divisor is the number underneath, the denominator.

What does r mean in a division answer?

It stands for remainder. 21 r 1 reads twenty-one remainder one: 4 goes into 85 twenty-one times with 1 left over. The remainder can also be written as a fraction of the divisor, which makes the same answer 21¼.

Can the remainder be bigger than the divisor?

No. The remainder is always smaller than the divisor: here 1 is less than 4. When the dividend is an exact multiple of the divisor, nothing is left over and the remainder is 0.

Is there an answer key for the fill in the blank labels?

Yes. The key is the same sheet with a name at the end of each of the seven lines. The numbered copy has its own key, with the seven names on numbered lines under the drawing.
