How this list was compiled: Every name, symbol and atomic number was checked on 2026-09-30 in two places: the table of the IUPAC Commission on Isotopic Abundances and Atomic Weights, https://www.ciaaw.org/atomic-weights.htm, and the PubChem periodic table, https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/periodic-table/ (read as https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/rest/pug/periodictable/CSV). The place of every box, the group numbers 1 to 18 and the two rows of 15 set below follow the IUPAC Periodic Table of the Elements dated 4 May 2022 (the PDF linked from https://iupac.org/what-we-do/periodic-table-of-elements/, read the same day in the Internet Archive copy of 16 September 2026, because the IUPAC site refused a plain request). Seven periods and 18 groups numbered 1 to 18: OpenStax Chemistry 2e, section 2.5, https://openstax.org/books/chemistry-2e/pages/2-5-the-periodic-table. Licence: own work
The drawing: Drawn for this site on 2026-09-30. Only the arrangement follows the IUPAC Periodic Table of the Elements (4 May 2022); the drawing is new. Licence: own work
How it works
This blank periodic table printable is an empty grid of 118 boxes in 18 groups and seven periods. Print it as it is, with an atomic number in every box, or with the symbols filled in as a key.
Read the full guide
Blank, numbered or named
The table opens empty, with only the group numbers along the top and the period numbers down the side. Numbered writes each atomic number in its box and prints a line for every name. Named writes the symbols in. Print this table prints the version on screen.
A periodic table template blank for any task
As a periodic table template, the empty grid takes whatever a lesson asks for: symbols, names or atomic numbers. Under Start from, First 20 keeps hydrogen to calcium and First 36 hydrogen to krypton. As a blank periodic table of elements worksheet, the numbered sheet asks for all 118 names.
Hand out the empty table with a reference table beside it for a first pass, then again without one.
Fill in one period or one group at a time; the numbers along the top and the side keep your place.
Questions and answers
How many boxes are on a blank periodic table?
118, one for each named element, hydrogen to oganesson. They sit in 18 groups and seven periods, as on the IUPAC Periodic Table of the Elements dated 4 May 2022.
Why are two rows set below the table?
They hold elements 57 to 71 and 89 to 103, the lanthanides and the actinides, fifteen in each row. Setting them below keeps the table 18 columns wide. One star marks their place in period 6 and two stars in period 7.
What is an atomic number?
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom of the element. The boxes run in order of atomic number, left to right and row by row, so the numbered table counts from 1 to 118.
Is there a periodic table of elements template with the answers?
Yes. Choose Named to see every symbol in its box, or press Print the answer key. The same table is also a quiz: an element is named and you tap its box.
