How it works
Two drawings share this fill in the blank worksheet: a sea lion sitting on its rock, then its head up close. A line runs from each of twelve parts, six on each drawing, to a blank for its name.

Word bank for the twelve blanks
In alphabetical order, so the list gives nothing away: claws, coat, crest, ear flap, eye, front flipper, hind flipper, neck, nostrils, snout, tail, whiskers.
Blanks that get swapped
The front flipper is the long, broad one planted on the rock under the chest; the hind flipper is at the rear, turned forward under the body. The claws are the small dark marks on top of the hind flipper. On the head, the snout is the whole front of the face and the nostrils are the two slits at its tip.
- Two small shapes on the head are easy to swap: the ear flap is behind the eye, the crest on top of the forehead.
Questions and answers
How many flippers does a sea lion have?
Four: a pair of front flippers and a pair of hind flippers. On land a sea lion rests its weight on all four. The worksheet has one blank for a front flipper and one for a hind flipper.
Do sea lions have claws?
Yes, on the hind flippers. A sea lion grooms its coat with them.
Do sea lions have tails?
Yes, a small one. The streamlined body tapers to it. On the worksheet the tail is the short stub at the very back of the animal.
Do sea lions have fur?
Yes. A sea lion has a sleek, single coat of hair. A California sea lion pup is born dark brown and sheds that coat at four to five months for a light brown or silver one.
Does the sea lion worksheet have an answer key?
Yes. The key is the worksheet again with all twelve names written on the two drawings.
