Start here: 7 main parts 7

  1. Wing A bat's wing is skin stretched over its arm and hand.
  2. Ear Large ears catch the echoes of a bat's calls.
  3. Eye Bats are not blind. Insect-eating bats have small eyes.
  4. Fur Fur covers the body. A bat is a mammal.
  5. Foot Sharp curved claws let a bat cling to its roost.
  6. Tail The tail runs through the tail membrane. Some bats have no tail.
  7. Thumb The thumb is short and has a claw. A bat climbs with it.

The wing is a hand 4

  1. Forearm The forearm is long and thin. It runs from the elbow to the wrist.
  2. Wrist The thumb and the four fingers fan out from the wrist.
  3. Fingers Four very long fingers hold the wing open.
  4. Wing membrane The wing membrane is thin skin. Its other name is the patagium.

Ear, legs and tail 3

  1. Tragus The tragus is a skin flap in the ear. It helps a bat place sounds.
  2. Tail membrane The tail membrane stretches between the legs. Some bats scoop up insects with it.
  3. Calcar The calcar is a spur from the ankle. It holds the tail membrane's edge.

How it works

The worksheet numbers 14 parts of a bat. Seven are the main parts: wing, ear, eye, fur, foot, tail and thumb. Seven more are the hand inside the wing and the small parts of the ear, legs and tail.

Seven main parts, then the hand in the wing

Numbers 1 to 7 are the main parts: a wing, an ear, an eye, the fur, a foot, the tail and a thumb. Numbers 8 to 11 are inside the wing on the left: the forearm, the wrist, the fingers and the wing membrane between them. Numbers 12 to 14 are the tragus in the ear, the tail membrane between the legs and the calcar at the ankle. Print this worksheet gives the sheet; Print the answer key gives the key.

  • Hold up your own hand: a bat's wing has the same thumb and four fingers, grown very long.

Questions and answers

Is there a bat labeling worksheet to print?

Yes. Print this worksheet gives this drawing with numbered rings and a numbered line for each name. Print the answer key gives the same sheet with the names filled in.

What is a bat's wing made of?

Skin and bone. A thin membrane of skin, the patagium, is stretched over the arm and over four very long fingers, and it reaches back to the hind legs. The short thumb stays free and has a claw.

What is the tragus on a bat?

A small flap of skin that stands inside the ear. Echoes that bounce off it help a bat tell how high its target is.

Do bats have tails?

Many do. On the bat drawn here the tail runs through a tail membrane stretched between the hind legs. Fruit bats and flying foxes have no tail.
