How this list was compiled: An everyday word list; each word was checked on 2026-10-01 in two dictionaries for its spelling, its meaning and the British form to accept. (1) Cambridge Dictionary, https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/ followed by the word: hat (a covering for the head; its example, a woolly hat), scarf, coat, hood (the part of a piece of clothing pulled up to cover the head), glove (separate parts for each finger), mitten (a single part for all the fingers and a separate part for the thumb; also mitt), earmuffs, boot, sock, and ski pants (in Britain also salopettes). (2) Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, https://www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/ followed by the word: hat, scarf, coat, hood, glove, mitten, earmuffs (two pieces of material joined by a band over the top of the head, worn to keep the ears warm), boot, sock, ski pants. Snow pants is in neither of those two; it was read in (3) Merriam-Webster, snow pants, in the Internet Archive copy because the live page refuses scripts, https://web.archive.org/web/2025/https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/snow%20pants (pants for outdoor winter wear that are lined and often water-repellent; less commonly snowpants), and (4) Wiktionary, snow pants, https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/snow_pants. What is the difference between gloves and mittens?

A glove has a separate part for each finger. A mitten has one part for all four fingers and a separate part for the thumb.
