How it works
These parts of a cowboy boot run from top to toe. The tall shaft carries the stitching, the piping and a pull strap; below the instep, the vamp covers the foot, ending at the toe; the sole and a stacked heel sit underneath.

Shaft, stitching and piping
The shaft is the tall part that covers the lower leg, usually worn under the trousers. Rows of decorative stitching help it keep its shape, and thin leather piping finishes the side seams. The pull straps at the top are for pulling the boot on.
Vamp, toe and heel
The vamp covers the foot from the instep to the toe, and the toe's shape, pointed, round or square, names the style. The heel is a stacked riding heel, taller and slanted, made to hold a stirrup.
Questions and answers
What is the top part of a cowboy boot called?
The shaft. It rises from the instep to the top edge, often dipping at the front and back, and carries the pull straps.
What are the loops on cowboy boots for?
They are pull straps: leather tabs on top of the shaft that you grip to pull the boot on.
What is the vamp of a boot?
The leather that covers the top of the foot, from the instep to the toe. On a cowboy boot it is often a different leather from the shaft.
