Addends and sum
The numbers you add are the addends, here 47 and 38. The answer is the sum, 85. The plus sign means add, and the equals sign shows both sides have the same value.
Stacked and carried
Stacked, the ones go in one column and the tens in another. Adding the ones gives 7 + 8 = 15: write the 5 and carry the 1 to the top of the tens column, then add the tens.
- Order does not matter: 38 + 47 is also 85, so you can check by adding the other way.
Questions and answers
What are the numbers in an addition problem called?
The numbers being added are the addends, also called summands. The answer is the sum, sometimes called the total.
What is carrying in addition?
When a column adds up to 10 or more, you write the ones digit and carry the tens digit to the next column. In 47 + 38, 7 + 8 = 15, so the 1 is carried.
What is the augend?
Some books name the first addend the augend. In 47 + 38 it is 47; most classes just call both numbers addends.
