Buckle collar, snap collar, leash
Numbers 1 to 6 are on the top collar: the strap, the buckle and its tongue, the holes, the D-ring and the ID tag. Numbers 7 and 8 are on the middle collar: the quick-release buckle and the slide that sets the size. Numbers 9 to 12 are the leash: handle loop, webbing, swivel and snap hook.
- The snap hook on the leash clips to the D-ring on the collar.
- A buckle collar changes size hole by hole. A collar with a slide can be set anywhere along the strap.
Questions and answers
What are the parts of a dog collar?
A strap, a buckle to fasten it and a D-ring for the leash and the ID tag. A buckle collar has a tongue and a row of holes. A quick-release collar has a two-piece plastic buckle and a slide to set its size.
What are the parts of a dog leash?
A handle loop at one end, a long strap of webbing, and at the other end a snap hook that clips to the collar. The hook often hangs from a swivel, which keeps the leash from twisting.
What is the ring on a dog collar called?
A D-ring, after its shape: one straight side held by the strap and one curved side. The leash's hook clips to it, and ID tags hang from it.
What is a quick-release buckle?
A plastic buckle in two halves. Two springy arms on one half click into openings in the other, and squeezing the arms releases them. It is also called a side-release buckle.
