Show the list
  1. Frond One of the palm's huge leaves. In a feather palm like this one, each frond is a long midrib with leaflets along both sides.
  2. Leaflets The narrow blades growing in two rows along a frond's midrib.
  3. Leaf sheath The broad, tube-like base of each frond. It wraps round the top of the trunk. It usually splits open as it gets older.
  4. Fruit Each fruit holds a single seed. Coconuts and dates are palm fruits.
  5. Spathe A tough, boat-shaped bract that wraps the flower cluster before it opens. The bract turns woody.
  6. Flower cluster A branched cluster of small, usually white flowers. It grows from among the leaf bases.
  7. Trunk The palm's single stem. It stays about the same width all the way up, and the rings on it are the scars of old fronds.
  8. Roots Many roots grow from the base of the trunk. They spread into the soil, anchoring the palm against the wind.

How this list was compiled: Read 2026-09-27. (1) Wikipedia, Arecaceae, Morphology, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arecaceae : a lone shoot that ends in a crown of leaves; large evergreen leaves, pinnately (feather) or palmately (fan) compound; a tubular sheath at the leaf's base that usually splits down one side; the inflorescence, a spadix surrounded by bracts or spathes that become woody; small, usually white flowers; the fruit usually a single-seeded drupe; the trunk of almost constant diameter. (2) Encyclopaedia Britannica, 11th edition (1911), Palm, https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/1911_Encyclop%C3%A6dia_Britannica/Palm : the stem marked with circular scars where old leaves have fallen; leaves pinnate or palmate; the fibrous leaf-stalk; the flowers protected by a spathe; the fruit; adventitious roots from the base of the stem that steady the tree against the wind. How it works

These are the parts of a palm tree, drawn as a feather palm like a coconut palm, from the roots in the soil to the crown of fronds at the top.

The crown

The fronds spiral out from the crown at the top. Each is a long midrib with leaflets along both sides, and its broad sheath wraps the top of the trunk. Below them hang the fruit and a flower cluster in its boat-shaped spathe.

Trunk and roots

The trunk stays about the same width all the way up, and its rings are the scars of old fronds. Many roots spread from its base and anchor it against the wind.

  • A palm's trunk does not thicken with age the way an oak's does, so it has no growth rings inside.

Questions and answers

Is a palm tree a real tree?

Botanically palms are monocots, closer to grasses than to oaks: their trunk does not grow wider each year the way a tree's does. They are still usually called trees.

What are palm leaves called?

Fronds. A feather palm's fronds have leaflets along a midrib; a fan palm's spread out like a hand.

What are the rings on a palm trunk?

Scars left where old fronds were attached, which fell away one by one as the palm grew taller.
