How it works
The parts of a well system fall into two sets: the well in the ground, from cap to screen, and the pump, tank and controls that deliver the water. This drawing cuts a drilled well open from the aquifer to the pressure tank indoors.

Parts of a well pump system, in flow order
Groundwater passes the gravel pack and the well screen into the casing. The submersible pump, driven by the motor coupled to it, pushes water through the check valve and up the drop pipe. At the pitless adapter it turns into the buried water service pipe and runs to the tank tee. The pressure tank fills until the pressure switch stops the pump.
Parts of a well pump: submersible or jet
A submersible pump hangs under water and pushes. A jet pump sits above ground and pulls: its jet, a narrow cone, makes a partial vacuum that draws water up the suction pipe, and a foot valve closes when the pump stops. The inset shows the shallow-well kind.
Pick the group Jet pump inset for 4 parts alone: jet pump, jet, suction pipe and foot valve. The drawing zooms in.
Start here: 8 main parts runs from the well cap down to the well screen, then indoors to the pressure tank and its switch.
Questions and answers
What are the parts of a water well diagram?
In the ground: the well cap, casing, grout, pitless adapter, well screen and gravel pack, set in an aquifer below the water table. This drawing numbers those with the water service pipe, 9 in all, then 17 pump, tank and control parts.
What does a pitless adapter do?
It joins the drop pipe inside the casing to the buried water service pipe, below the frost line, with a sanitary, frost-proof seal through the casing wall. The casing can then end above ground under a well cap, within easy reach for service work.
What does the pressure switch on a well do?
It starts the pump when the tank pressure falls to the cut-in setting and stops it at the cut-out setting. One state well handbook gives the usual settings as 20 to 40 psi to start and 40 to 60 psi to stop.
How deep can a shallow well jet pump draw water?
A shallow-well jet pump, with the jet inside the pump, is used where the water is under 25 feet below the surface. For deeper water the jet goes down the well, or a submersible pump is used.
