Outside 11

  1. Hull The shell and framework that float the yacht. A motor yacht hull is a full-displacement, semi-displacement or planing type.
  2. Bow The front of a vessel.
  3. Bow pulpit A platform at the very front. It makes the anchor easier to handle.
  4. Anchor A metal hook on a chain or line. It grips the bottom and keeps the yacht from drifting.
  5. Windlass An anchor windlass holds the anchor chain. It lets the anchor be raised and lowered.
  6. Foredeck The part of the deck toward the bow.
  7. Flybridge An open area atop the yacht. It has a clear view ahead, behind and to both sides. Also called a flying bridge.
  8. Helm The wheel and the place the yacht is steered from. Some yachts have a second, lower helm inside.
  9. Cockpit An open seating area toward the stern.
  10. Transom The stern's aft wall.
  11. Swim platform A platform at the boat's back that swimmers use.

Rooms 5

  1. Stateroom A sleeping cabin. A cruising yacht will likely have one forward. Larger yachts have more.
  2. Head The bathroom. Its marine toilet empties into a holding tank.
  3. Galley The compartment for cooking and preparing food.
  4. Salon The main living space. It typically has a dining area and is next to the galley. Also spelled saloon.
  5. Engine room The machinery space. Motor yachts usually have one diesel engine or more.

Under the stern 2

  1. Propeller It is mounted on a shaft that comes out through the hull. The engine turns it.
  2. Rudder A steering blade at the stern that pivots to turn the yacht.

How this list was compiled: Every name checked on 2026-09-30 and kept only where two independent sources use it. How it works

The parts of a yacht, drawn on a motor yacht with its bow to the right. The first view is the outside, afloat. The second cuts the yacht open to show the rooms.

Read the full guide

Outside, from bow to stern

The bow pulpit sticks out past the bow, with the anchor under it and the windlass that raises it on the foredeck. The flybridge is the open area on the roof, and the helm on it is where the yacht is steered. The cockpit is the open seating area toward the stern. The transom is the back wall of the hull, and the swim platform is fixed to it.

The rooms have their own names

The living room is the salon, the kitchen is the galley, a bedroom is a stateroom and the bathroom is the head. The engine room holds the engines, which turn the propeller under the stern.

  • Motor yachts run from about 33 to 130 feet long; longer ones are called superyachts.
  • Layouts vary: the one drawn has the galley and a stateroom below and forward of the salon.

Questions and answers

What are the parts of a yacht called?

Outside: the hull, the bow with its pulpit and anchor, the foredeck, the flybridge with the helm, the cockpit, the transom and the swim platform. Inside: the salon, the galley, the staterooms, the head and the engine room.

What is the top deck of a yacht called?

On a motor yacht the open area on top is the flybridge, or flying bridge. It has a clear view ahead, behind and to both sides, and the yacht can be steered from the helm there.

What are the rooms on a yacht called?

The main living space is the salon, also spelled saloon. The kitchen is the galley, a sleeping cabin is a stateroom, and the bathroom is the head.
