Blank, numbered or named

The sheet opens blank. Choose Numbered to put a number on each of the 26 cantons of Switzerland, or Named for their names, then press Print this map; the answer key prints on its own sheet.

A blank map of Switzerland, big and small cantons

Grisons is the largest canton and Basel-Stadt the smallest, so it carries a ring. Appenzell Innerrhoden and Appenzell Ausserrhoden are both surrounded by St. Gallen. Ticino, south of the Alps, is the one canton whose only official language is Italian.

  • Names are the English ones, such as Geneva and Lucerne; the German, French or Italian name counts too when students type answers in the quiz.

Questions and answers

How many cantons does Switzerland have?

Twenty-six, since the canton of Jura was formed in 1979. All 26 are drawn and numbered on this map.

Which is the largest canton?

Grisons, in the south-east, the only canton with Romansh as an official language. Bern is the second largest.

Is Liechtenstein part of Switzerland?

No. Liechtenstein is an independent country on the eastern border, drawn beside Switzerland without a number.
